Week of February 29th

MARCH IS READING MONTH   Our school theme is “Earthlings, take me to your Reader.”  

READING: Week 3 of Unit 7  How Weather Affects Us.  (rain, temperature changes, cloudy)  We’ll talk about Hibernation. Who hibernates?  Why do they hibernate?      We’ll be reading a story about a bear who hibernates and we’ll read The Mitten.  On Friday we will compare and contrast the two texts.

WRITING: In celebration of March is reading Month, we will create our first book report. We will analyze a story and pull out the elements that define a story. Sentence stems will be:

  • The characters of the story __(title)___ by __(author)___ are _____.
  • The setting of the story __(title)__ by __(author)__ is the __.
  • The problem of the story was____.
  • The solution of the story was____.
  • My favorite part of this story was____.

SPELLING WORDS: We will work with the “et” word family

Here are next week’s words:    said   little   pet  get  set  net  fret   hibernate

MATH: We will be graphing colored gold fish and exploring the quarter (25 cents).  Have your child count your change-pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. Remind them to start with the largest coin first and then add on the rest.  For example, when adding up pennies, nickels, and dimes, start with the dimes (“ten, twenty, thirty”  and then add on the nickels “five, ten, fifteen” and then add on the pennies “) Practice!  Practice!  Practice!   Count Daddy’s money,  Mom’s money,  Grandma’s money.

We will also building 2-d and 3-d models using marshmallows and toothpicks.

SCIENCE:  We will differentiate between living and non-living things. Remember living things eat, breathe and grow. For example: plants, animals and people. Non-living things do not eat, grow, or breathe. For example: rocks, toys and refrigerator.

SOCIAL STUDIES: We will review maps and globes. We will practice using the compass rose to move around on a map. Please review North, South, East and West with your child.Also review the importance of a map key. ]

  • SPIRIT WEEK starts today. Please refer to flyer posted last week.
  • Book fair preview Tuesday, March 1st
  • Homework coming home this week-due Friday
  • Reading ticket for minutes also due this Friday. Make sure you read for 20 minutes each day, so your child can earn a special recognition each Friday.
