Teacher of The Year Nominations

It’s time for students to nominate their favorite Dearborn Public Schools teacher for the 2020 Alberta Muirhead Teacher of the Year Students’ Choice Award, sponsored by the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce and presented by LaFontaine Automotive Group.  The nomination deadline is Monday, March 9, 2020 at 5 p.m.   Nominations can be submitted online here (the preferred method) or via a paper form.

Printed nomination forms may be picked up at any Dearborn Public School and the District’s Administration Office, 18700 Audette. Completed forms can be dropped off or mailed to the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce, 22100 Michigan Ave., Dearborn, MI 48124 or faxed to (313) 584-9818. Adults may assist students in completing nominations when necessary, but no more than two teachers can be nominated per student.

Students may nominate any new or veteran teachers whom they feel has made outstanding contributions to the teaching profession.  Pre-school through second grade students are asked to describe how their teacher makes learning fun.  Students in this category can include a nice drawing, if they wish, but it will not be part of the selection process.  Third through fifth grade students must describe how their teacher has created a classroom where learning is positive and fun.  Middle school students (grades 6-8) are asked to explain how their teacher connects classroom learning with everyday life.  Students in high school must describe how their teacher is preparing them to be college and career ready.

“Nominating a teacher for this award is an outstanding way for students to show teachers how much their work is valued and appreciated and the positive impact teachers have on students’ lives. We have so many excellent teachers deserving of this recognition, and I hope many of our students will take a few moments to nominate their favorite teacher,” said Dearborn Public Schools Superintendent Glenn Maleyko.

Haigh D-SHINES Program

Dear families,

Haigh is excited to collaborate with Wayne State University to begin our D-SHINES program this spring. D-SHINES will convert part of the large field behind our school into a full garden, complete with massive garden beds, shed, picnic tables and benches for an outdoor classroom. The focus of this program is to promote healthy lifestyle choices, proper nutrition and the importance of physical activity.

Before we begin this program, the D-SHINES program coordinator from WSU would like to collect information from our families to develop a program that is best suited for our students and our families. The survey takes approximately six minutes. Please take the time to complete this survey (only one survey per family is needed).

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1oDA12PPm3jHDswcnfLG2sG1fqbyNz7Tsb720bIOaocU/edit?usp=sharing

Thanks so much for your help and support as we begin this awesome program!

Peek at Our Week

Good afternoon Haigh families! It has been a great week off and my family and I are loving the sunshine. Hopefully your family has enjoyed the time off to rest, relax, and spend quality time together.

Reminders for the week:

  • Tuesday—PBIS escape room
  • Thursday—Sky Dome Planetarium assembly

This week in reading we will work on making inferences in a text. We will practice using our prior knowledge, picture cues, and evidence from the text to infer important information about the characters thoughts, motivations, and feelings. In writing we will learn about opinion writing and take a stance on cutting down trees in the rain forest. We will practice using sources and do some of our own research to help support our opinion with evidence from a source.

In math we will begin our next unit of fractions. The fraction unit is one of my favorites because it is such a big concept and so very important. It is also my favorite because we have worked so hard with our multiplication/division strategies and building up our number sense. I just know we are ready to dig deep into this unit!

In social studies we will continue to talk about how manufacturing really helped grow the state of Michigan. We will begin to talk about the growth of the automobile industry in Michigan.

Academic Vocabulary:

  1. Manufacturing- the process of using resources to make a product for people to purchase.
  2. Fraction- a part of a whole.
  3. Mining- the process of getting minerals or precious metals from the ground.
  4. Partition- to cut or divide into pieces.

I am looking forward to a great week last week of February at Haigh!
