Peek at Our Week

on January 12, 2020

Good evening Haigh families! I hope everyone had a restful weekend. Mine has been super busy with a hockey tournament for my son Austen, more hockey for my other son Alex, and a birthday party at Defy Detroit ( a super FUN place to go!) A winning weekend for sure 🙂

Tomorrow we will begin our winter NWEA testing. We will begin with reading this week and then get started on our language. Next week we will work on math. Like always, please remind your child how important it is to take their time on each test, read the question carefully, and try their best to answer the question. We will test each day for about 40 minutes. Please be sure to feed them a healthy breakfast and offer them some encouraging words on their way out tomorrow 🙂

Reminders for the week:

  • PTA meeting on Tuesday @ 4:15 in the library
  • NO LATE START on WEDNESDAY!! This was on error on the green January calendar
  • Social Studies test on Thursday; please look for the study guide to go home on Tuesday
  • Haigh school store on Thursday during lunch
  • ALL Little Caesars pizza kit orders due FRIDAY
  • Half day Friday; dismissal @ 11:45

This week in reading we will continue to work on finding the main idea. We will extend our learning by reading longer texts and practicing supporting our main ideas with 3 details from the text. In writing we will continue to work on our informational snow paper.

In math this week we will begin our multiplication wall of fame 1 minute tests on each fact in isolation. Students will begin with times 2 facts and if they pass they will write their name on the special “Wall of fame” board. The next day they will take times 3 and so on. The goal is to promote fact fluency in which we have been working so hard on with our skip counting and sprint practice. Please help your child by practicing with them and asking them which times fact they are on. For our math lessons this week we will look at the use of parentheses in both the distributive and associative properties of multiplication. We will also be touching on some skill builder topics (geometry terms, graphs, time) to help them with their upcoming NWEA math test.

In social studies we will be finsihing up Michigan state hood and test on Thursday.

In science we will be looking at different weather and climates around the world.

Academic Words:

  1. Pioneer- someone who is first to settle in an area.
  2. Area- the amount of space on the INSIDE of a shape. Area= length X width.
  3. Perimeter- the distance AROUND a shape. We add ALL the sides.
  4. Right angle- an angle that measures 90 degrees.
  5. Acute angle- an angle that is LESS THAN 90 degrees.

Looking forward to a great week 🙂
