Good afternoon Haigh families. I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving with family. I have really enjoyed this break to take time to enjoy the holiday cheer with my family.

This week in reading we will be focusing on determining the main idea of a text by thinking about the topic and figuring out what the text is trying to tell us about a topic. In writing we will compose a informational writing for our district writing prompt. Later in the week we will begin to look at the difference between fact and opinion and learn about fact based opinion writing.

In math we are moving on to unit 3 which is addition and subtraction strategies. We will take our pre-test tomorrow and begin our new unit on Tuesday. We will still be taking our daily one minute multiplication fact quiz, so please keep studying!

In social studies we will be looking at the Native Americans in Michigan.

Academic Vocabulary:

  1. Topic-the subject that is being discussed.
  2. Fact- a statement that is true and can be proven.
  3. Opinion- what someone thinks about a something.
  4. Decade- a period of ten years.
  5. Attract- when two things come together, like a magnets north and south pole.

Peek at Our Week

Good evening Haigh families. I hope you have enjoyed the weekend with your family.

Reminders for the week:

  • Book fair starts tomorrow and we will be visiting as a class in the morning. Students may bring money or browse. Book fair will be open all week and in the evening on both Wednesday and Thursday.
  • Wednesday: Late start, school begins at 9:35
  • Thursday: Savory foods fundraiser pickup at Haigh between 2:30-5:00
  • Parent teacher conferences on Wednesday and Thursday after school; reminders have been sent out.

This week we will continue to talk about non-fiction text features and begin learning about how to find the main idea in a non-fiction text. In writing we will work on comparing the upper and lower peninsula and composing our 5 paragraph essay.

In math we will continue to focus on multiplication fluency and strategies. We will begin our week with a quiz on multiplication/division word problems and focus on in/out charts and word problems. Please encourage your child to practice for their math fact fluency tests that we take each afternoon. Ask your child what fact they are on.

In social studies we will begin our unit on the history of Michigan.

In science we will continue to work on magnets.

Academic Vocabulary:

  1. Conclusion- The end of a story or a writing.
  2. Heading- A title at the top of a text that tells what you will be reading about.
  3. History-The study of past events.
  4. Equation-A mathematical statement that has an equal sign. ex: 3 x 4 = 12
  5. Magnet-A piece of material that is able to attract certain metals.

Peek at Our Week

Good afternoon Haigh families 🙂

Reminders for the week:

  • No school Tuesday
  • Canned food drive- please consider sending in canned food donations
  • Haigh shirt orders due by TOMORROW
  • Thursday school store will be open during lunch
  • Conferences on Thursday, reminders will be sent home tomorrow reminding you of your scheduled time (Conferences are also the following Wednesday and Thursday) I am looking forward to meeting with each of you to discuss your child’s progress 🙂
  • Friday is picture re-take day

This week in reading we will be working on being aware of nonfiction text features and using them as a tool to help us comprehend a text. We will learn how to highlight textual evidence back in the text to help confirm our answer to comprehension questions. In writing this week we will work on composing our compare paper about our partners and begin another compare paper about Michigan.

In math this week we will focus on story problems involving multiplication AND division. Students will use a story problem organizer to help them determine if a story problem is asking them to multiply or divide. We will continue to work on our one minute multiplication quizzes each day. Please remind your child to practice each night on the fact they have achieved.

In social studies we will complete our regions posters and share them with the class. We will begin our new unit where students will learn about the history of Michigan.

In science we will investigate magnets through our mystery science lessons.

Academic Vocabulary (Same as last week, test on Friday):

  1. Region- An area of land that has common features.
  2. Caption- Explains what a picture is about.
  3. Edit- To make changes to a piece of writing.
  4. Compare- To tell how things are alike or the same.
  5. Pattern- A repeated sequence of things like numbers or pictures.
