Newsletter Week 27 (Recap and NEW info)! Happy Spring Break!

Image result for spring break

See you all back Monday, April 9th!

You will notice some crafts, in your child’s folder,  that they made today in class today.  Here are some pictures of us painting in the classroom:)

Slime Mr. Short Challenge:  Today, we witnessed Mr. Short getting slime’d by all of the wonderful Haigh students.  This reward was an incentive for all students to work hard and do their best on the winter MAP test!  If grade levels exceeded 75% in both math and reading, students were able to slime Mr. Short.  We are happy to announce that the Kindergarten grade level scored 80% in both math and reading and were able to participate in the challenge!  Here are the pictures from today…ENJOY (we sure did;))!!

What we did during our week:

Language Arts: We worked on -ed  words and onset and rime. We have officially learned all the letters of the alphabet!  Spelling words to study for next week: List 14: where, out, now, sip, lip, dip, slip, ship, and chip.   Please practice the extra cold -ip words, as there will be a cold word for number 10 on the test!  Extra words: grip, tip, rip.  Our 14th test will be Friday, April 13th.

The 4 main components of narrative writing are: It’s written by the character,  it’s written about real life events, it’s written in sequential order: first, next and last and lastly, it’s written with feelings.  We will move back to informational writing in April!

After listening to the story “Hey, Little Ant,” we wrote on an opinion writing piece (on a blue print), our feelings if the ant in the story should get “squished” or “be set free.”  The majority of our students felt the ant should be set free, but we had one student who though it should get squished because “ants are nasty.” LOL!  Enjoy our opinion writing from our Kindergartners:)  They did such a great job on opinion writing…I am one happy teacher!

Math:  We will continue to talk about subtraction and addition and greater than/less than. We have a little bit of everything during our math workshop: greater than/less than, count the room, smash it! subtraction, addition, missing numbers, etc.

When you send in money for your child, whether it be for lunch, lunchroom snacks, field trip, please enclose the money in an ENVELOPE with your child’s FIRST and LAST name on the front, indicate what the money is for and write my name as well: Mrs. Fillmore.  This will cause for less confusion for the lunch room and for the classroom. Thank you!
  • Please make sure to log onto math seeds and reading eggs when there is downtime at home, especially on the weekends!  I have laminated and attached logins/passwords for EACH child on their communication log this week!  Please keep this in a safe place, so it doesn’t get lost. These programs are free for you to use, how awesome is that?  All you need to do is to show your child how to log in and they can begin learning!  Parents, in the classroom, I am trying to teach each child to login typing their own username and password…independence is the name of the game!   If you could be so kind, to help your child do the same at home, it would help so much! Thank you!

Monday-  Dress like an animal   Tuesday-  Twin Day     Wednesday-  Hat Day    Thursday-  Dress like a book character   Friday-  Crazy hair/ wear green day

What we did during our week:

Language Arts: We worked on -ot words and onset and rime. We have officially learned all the letters of the alphabet!  Spelling words to study for next week: List 11: yes, by, want, this, bug, hug, mug, tug, slug.  Please practice the extra cold -ug words, as there will be a cold word for number 10 on the test!  Extra words: shrug, jug, pug, rug.  Our 11th test will be Friday, March 16th.

Writing:  In writing, we finished our star student book and are doing some more narrative  writing in March! The 4 main components of narrative writing are: It’s written by the character,  it’s written about real life events, it’s written in sequential order: first, next and last and lastly, it’s written with feelings.                                                                                                                                                                                                        Image result for narrative writing poster for kindergarten

Math:  We will continue to talk about subtraction and addition  in March, but I will also introduce greater than/less than as well. We have a little bit of everything during our math workshop: count the room, smash it! subtraction, addition, missing numbers, etc.

Math Quizzes: We have a math quiz on Friday, March 16th on math facts +10!  After our +10 test, we will go into subtraction -0.  Please make the flashcards at home for your child to help them prepare for their math quiz. For extra practice at home (instead of the flash cards), you could also use counters (or food) for a visual representation of the math equation for your child. You can also practice with your child by having them put the big number in their head and the small number on their hands and then count up. Try to make it fun! Thank you for supporting your child with their addition skills!

Science: We will be wrapping up our Polar Climate this month!  The students will be tested on their knowledge of Polar Animals at the end of the month!

Social Studies: We are having fun learning about maps and drawing maps!

March is Reading Month:  Your child came home with a “Paws for Reading” packet.  In this packet is a special calendar with all kinds of exciting reading activities you can do at home with your child!  Also, you will see a 2018 March Reading Log to keep track of your child’s reading minutes at home. Each child who returns their reading log by Wednesday, April 11th will earn a special prize, if they have reached their recommended reading goal for the month.  The Kindergarten reading goal is 20 minutes per day...I know we can do it!  Make sure to jot the minutes down on the reading log calendar and on the homework as well:)
