What we did during our week:

Language Arts: We worked on -ag word family. We have officially learned all the letters of the alphabet!  Spelling words to study for next week: List 19: first, next, last, will, grin, crab, clip, shark, twig.  Please practice the extra cold words, as there will be a cold word for number 10 on the test!  Extra words: flat.  Our 19th test will be Friday, May 18th.

Writing:    In writing, we finished our star student book and are doing some informational writing about ocean animals!  We are finding facts about ocean animals to use in our writing. How fun!

Math:  We will continue to talk about subtraction and addition and greater than/less than. We have a little bit of everything during our math workshop: greater than/less than, count the room, smash it! subtraction, addition, missing numbers, etc.

Math Quizzes: We have a math quiz on Friday, May 18th on math facts -7!  Please make the flashcards at home for your child to help them prepare for their math quiz. For extra practice at home (instead of the flash cards), you could also use counters (or food) for a visual representation of the math equation for your child. You can also practice with your child by having them put the big number in their head and the small number on their hands and then count up. Try to make it fun! Thank you for supporting your child with their addition skills!

Science: For the months of April-June we will move into learning about the Ocean

Ocean Projects:  We are O-FISH-ALLY counting down the last days of school with an ocean themed project. The children will be choosing an ocean animal to research and will write an informational book with me in class. In addition to the book, we are asking each student to create a model of their sea creature. This part of the assignment will be done at home. This model can be made from paper or other materials, and may be 2D or 3D.  Please send the completed model to school on Thursday, May 24th.

**All families are invited to join us for a presentation of our sea creature models and informational books on Friday, June 1st  at 2:45pm. This entire event will last 35 minutes. Hello Everyone:)

Yesterday I sent home your child’s Ocean Animal for their project due on May 24th.  This project can be created in a 2D or 3D shape.  I left some examples on the blog.  Take a look at the pictures, if you need some inspiration:)

Also, I sent home new books in your child’s reading bag.  These books will be the last ones for the year.  I am wrapping up our reading groups and beginning to test your child on their DRA level (Developmental Reading Assessment).  I am excited to see where our students are in terms of reading levels!  I have a feeling I will have most or all of the students reading at a level 4 or above!  Have a great week!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

To help us celebrate another fantastic school year, we will be having Field Day on Monday, May 14, 2018.  For this Field Day event students will work through stations with their class to develop skills they have learned in physical education and have tons of fun!  The schedule for the event is as follows:

9:00 AM – 11:00 AM: Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grades

1:00 PM – 3:00 PM: 3rd, 4th and 5th Grades

On May 14, students need to wear clothes that will allow them to be physically active outside, including tennis shoes.  They need to bring a water bottle. Students are highly encouraged to bring a water bottle that can be refilled at the refill station that we will provide.

We are looking for one parent from each classroom to donate a treat for the entire class to enjoy after their session.  We are also pre-selling Fla-vor-ice as a cool treat for students to enjoy during the activities. The cost for the Fla-vor-ice is $0.50, only one Fla-vor-ice per student please. Fla-vor-ice money is due by Monday, May 7.

Lastly, we need 15 parent volunteers for both sessions to help run stations.  If you are interested in volunteering, fill out the lower portion and return it to Mr. Peecher.  Please, contact Mr. Peecher with any questions.

Forgot to mention…

The students have worked really hard in the lunch room this week!  We earned a circle for everyday, which means they have followed the lunch room rules perfectly this week!  For each circle they earn, they get one point!  The class with the most points (at the end of each month) receives a treat and wins the lunch room challenge!  We have had a rough couple of months in the lunch room (earning a lot of triangles), so seeing all of these circles made them very happy (as they should be)!   Please praise your child for the good work this week in the lunch room, I am sure they would greatly appreciate it!  Have a nice weekend everyone:)

We have officially learned all the letters of the alphabet!  Spelling words to study for next week: List 16: from, went, him, cub, rub, sub, tub, club, stub  Please practice the extra cold -ub words, as there will be a cold word for number 10 on the test!  Extra words: shrub.  Our 16th test will be Friday, April 27th.

Math Quizzes: We have a math quiz on Friday, April 27th on math facts -4!

Science: For the months of April-June we will move into Ocean Animals!  We completed a RAN and completed a fun ocean activity to go along with our RAN activity.  The students also explored seashells and other shells from the Ocean!  Enjoy all of our Ocean pictures:)

Social Studies:  In April are learning about Civics and Government.

All Haigh students will have the opportunity to shop at our market, so if your child would like to purchase something, please send them to school with money. Hope to see you Tuesday!

Thanks for your support, The First Grade Teachers

  • You might have heard about the Penny Challenge!!!  We will be using reused milk jugs to collect money for adopting a wolf from the Detroit Zoo!  Please bring in your spare change to help the Haigh students raise money for the adoption! Thank you to the families who have donated a generous amount of coins already!  We appreciate it!
  • Our field trip to Domino Farms will be Thursday, April 26th from 9am-2pm.  All students are expected to bring a DISPOSABLE lunch in a brown bag to the farm.  Your child will experience a tractor ride, receive a bag of food to feed the animals and enjoy lunch in the great outdoors! Since there is limited space at the farm, no parents will be allowed on the field trip unless they have been chosen to chaperone.  Thank you for your cooperation in this matter!
  • Out of 22 students today, who took the spelling test, 14 received a 100% and 7 students only missed 1 to 2  words!! This is a TOTAL victory! Way to go to my students and parents who worked so hard to ensure their child was successful for the Friday spelling test!  I will send the booklet home on Monday for you all to see how your child did:). Remember, to look over your child’s spelling test booklet, sign on the line and return the booklet in the green folder the very next day (TUESDAY)!  It is imperative I receive them all back the next day!  Thank you!
  • Out of 22 students today, we had 15 students receive a 100% on their math quiz -3!   If your child is not performing at 70% or above, I suggest making flash cards for your child to practice at home with!  Way to go to my 12 students.  I am so proud of you!!
  • Please consider buying something from our Scholastic Book Club at: scholastic.com/bookclubs Activation code: RKYTJ.  Our LAST due date for book orders will be Friday, June 1st.  This will be our last order for the year!  There are a lot of great books for your child at a very reasonable price and FREE shipping.  Thank you to Violet’s family for buying something from our book club:)

Housekeeping items:

    • If your child’s green folder is falling apart, please use some packaging tape to put the folder back together, or please purchase another green folder for you child.  Some folders are torn in half and is difficult to place work and or important notes in your child’s folder. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter!
    • On Gym Days (Thursday and Friday), please make sure to send your child to school in Gym Shoes!  Mr. Peecher will have the kids sit on the stage if they are not wearing appropriate gym attire. Your child’s safety is our main priority.  Thank you!
  • Parents, I need your help! When you send in money for your child, whether it be for lunch, lunchroom snacks, field trip, please enclose the money in an ENVELOPE with your child’s FIRST and LAST name on the front, indicate what the money is for and write my name as well: Mrs. Fillmore.  This will cause for less confusion for the lunch room and for the classroom. Thank you!
  • Please make sure to log onto math seeds and reading eggs when there is downtime at home, especially on the weekends!  I have laminated and attached logins/passwords for EACH child on their communication log this week!  Please keep this in a safe place, so it doesn’t get lost. These programs are free for you to use, how awesome is that?  All you need to do is to show your child how to log in and they can begin learning!  Parents, in the classroom, I am trying to teach each child to login typing their own username and password…independence is the name of the game!   If you could be so kind, to help your child do the same at home, it would help so much! Thank you!

Penny/Nickel Challenge!

It’s time for the Penny/Nickel challenge!

This week, we are continuing our endangered animal adoption project. We are reusing milk jugs to collect money for adopting a wolf through the Detroit Zoo, and we need your help!

We are asking for your help with our penny/nickel challenge.

Bring in as many extra pennies or nickels as you can to help fill our jugs! At the end of the week, we’ll count up the totals and announce our winners!

Did you know???

A single wolf can eat up to 20 pounds of food in one sitting!
