This week: 1/28

Hello Families,

We are expected some very cold temperatures in the next few days.  With that being said, there will be no homework this week, no communication log, no spellings words and no newsletter.  We will pick back up where we left off on Monday, February 4th with the -ap word family and lessons 4-9 in Eureka Math.  Please continue to review concepts with your child at home: writing complete sentences, spelling words, sight words, letter sounds, stretching out sounds in words when writing, reading stories with comprehension, Succeed lessons in your Eureka Math, etc.

Remember there is a late start on Wednesday, February 6th and no school on Friday, February 8th for our Kindergarten/ Young 5’s students only!

Our 100th day celebration will be changed to Wednesday, February 13th (same day as our Valentine’s card exchange day).  Please be on the lookout for the new information to be sent home in your child’s folder.  Thank you for your understanding!  Stay warm.

Mrs. Fillmore

Newsletter Week 20 (Recap and NEW Info)!

Report Cards:  Your child’s report card is coming home today.  Please remove the report card from the manila envelope, sign and date on the manila envelope on the line that says “Card marking 2” and place envelope back into your child’s folder.  I need all envelopes signed and returned by Monday, January 28th.  Thank you!

Timeline project: I received 22 timeline projects this week.  Today, your child talked about their timeline and then the students were able to walk around and look at all the timelines of their friends:)   I will display them on the outside of our classroom for our Haigh community to see.  I will return the projects back to you sometime in February:)  WE loved learning about our friends in room 42<3   Thank you to all my families for working so hard on our social studies unit at home:)  We hope you enjoyed the ride down memory lane.

Testing results: I will have the results of how your child did in each assessment mid-February.  I will try to have them sooner, but I have to type up and print out all 23 results, which will take some time.  I am happy to report that the majority of our students exceeded their goals in NWEA and DRA.  I am so proud of each student working so hard and taking their time on all the tests they are given.

Reading Bags:  After I have tested all students in their DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment), I will able to switch books out of your child’s bag and give them books they are independently and developmentally reading at.  I appreciate your patience with me during this testing month.  I plan to have them switched out the 2nd week of February and then will continue back to new books being placed in your child’s reading bag bi-weekly:)

What we did during our week:

Language Arts: We have officially learned ALL the letters and sounds of the alphabet!  Now, we will use our sounds to help us with reading and writing new words:)  Next week spelling test List #7: me, on, do, she, cap, map, nap, tap, clap Bonus words to study at home: lap, snap. Make sure to practice the bonus word (10th word) at home for homework.  Our 7th spelling test will be on Friday, February 1st.

Writing:  The month of January and February we will focus on informative writing by using the words, “can, have, are” in our writing.  Please practice this strategy at home as well:)

Math:  This week we completed Module 4 Lessons 1-3.  Next week we will complete module 4 lessons 4-9.  Please make sure you are completing the homework lessons with your child each night.

Science: The month of January and February we will focus on polar climate.  The students will become experts on polar animals and climate:)

  • I am excited to report that out of 23 students who took the test, 18 students received a 100%  Woo hoo! I am so proud of each student who worked so hard all week to ensure they were successful on their test!  If your child received a 100%, they will write with a “smart” pen all day Monday and also participate in “NO shoes afternoon” on Monday as well:)  On Monday, once your child comes in from recess, they will be able to take their shoes off and relax for the last part of the day. Please make sure your child knows how to independently take off and put on their shoes.  I appreciate your support in this matter!  Also, make sure to wash your child’s socks as soon as they come home on Monday, they may be a little darker than normal;)
  • Please consider buying something from our Scholastic Book Club at: https://clubs.scholastic.com/  Activation code: RKYTJ. The January date to order books will be Monday, January 28th.
  • Please make sure you are reviewing your child’s classwork each night.  Monitoring your child’s classwork is a great indicator of how your child is doing in the class. If for some reason your child doesn’t finish his/her classwork in class, I will send it home for homework to be completed at home and returned the next day.  Thank you for your support!
  • Please make sure you provide your child with a NUT FREE snack.   We are a NUT FREE classroom. Thank you for your cooperation!
  • February is right around the corner, which means a lot of excitement for Valentine’s Day!  Our card exchange day will be on Wednesday, February 13th.  If you would like your child to participate, he/she may bring in 23 Valentine cards to pass out to their friends.  I ask that NO candy is brought into the class due to the several food allergies I have in the classroom: dairy, egg, all nuts, gluten, gelatin etc.  The risk of one of our students with allergies coming in contact with something they may be allergic to, is a risk we will prevent at all costs.  If your child brings in a bag of anything edible, we will kindly place the item back in your child’s backpack to enjoy at home. Thank you for your understanding on this matter.  Also, I ask that you do not address the Valentine cards to any specific child in the class.  You may just simply have your child write his/her name on the card to pass out to friends. If you have any other questions you may email me, communicate on the Remind App with me, write on the communication log or set up a time to discuss any matters you may have.  Thank you! Mrs. Fillmore

Housekeeping items:

  • The cold/winter season is upon us, which means cooler temperatures!  With cooler temperatures comes coats, boots, hats, scarves, gloves, etc.  It is important to teach your child how to properly put on a coat, zip up a coat, unzip the coat and take the coat off.  We have a handful of students who constantly need help putting on their coats etc, which means more time is taken away from recess because the teacher is zipping up 24 coats!  Also, please continue to practice tying shoes with your child. It is very hard to tie 2 pair of shoes X 24 students a day! That equals 48 shoes a day I would be tying, which would take up a lot of time during large and small group instruction.  We are encouraging students to become independent learners and with independence takes a lot of dedication and teaching your child at home. Thank you for your cooperation:)
  • If your child is bringing a home lunch, it is OK to pack a juice for the lunchroom!  Remember to pack a water bottle each day for the classroom:)
  • Please pack your child’s snack SEPARATELY from your child’s home lunch.  This will help your child become less confused about what is for lunch and what is for snack.  Thank you:)
  • Great news!  The PTA has a blog for all sorts of fun information going on in the school.  I may not have a lot of opportunities for all families to volunteer in the classroom, but the PTA is ALWAYS looking for extra hands to help in the school.  Please take a look at their blog and sign up for the fun events they may need help with:)  https://parents.dearbornschools.org/haigh/

Reading Bags

Hello Families!

January is a busy month for learning and assessing your child’s progress thus far.  With all of the assessments, I will not be able to send home books in your child’s reading bag on a bi-weekly basis.  In the meantime, please utilize the FREE educational websites Haigh has purchased for each student at our school: RAZ Kids and Reading Eggs (you can find the links under Educational Website on the blog).  We want to make sure your child is ahead of the learning curve and not falling behind in their reading.  Thank you for your understanding and partnership during this time:)

Mrs. Fillmore

Side note: Please make sure to continue to send your child’s reading bag to school each day for our daily instruction.  Thank you!

Newsletter Week 17 (Recap and NEW Info)!

Please read the news letter in it’s entirety.  I have some pictures from our winter holiday party at the end  of it:)  Thank you!

There will not be a homework packet during holiday break.  During the 2 weeks, I hope you all enjoy the time with loved ones.  During down time, please make sure to go over any items your child needs extra help with at home: letter/sound ID, sight words, retelling stories, spelling words and also don’t forget to visit the learning sites that Haigh has purchased (Reading Eggs, Math Seeds and RAZ Kids).

If you feel your child has mastered all of the above, you may visit the links below to better prepare your child for the NWEA test they will have to take in January.  Please note, the Kindergarten year end expectation for NWEA RIT score is 160 in both math and reading.   Please focus on the math and reading boxes (in each link) that have a RIT range from 130-160.  Happy preparing:)

Heads up: Library Check Out: On Monday (December 17th), your child checked in their library book, but did not check one out due to the 2 week winter break.  When the students return in January, they will be able to check out a book again:)

Polar Express/Pajama Day Pictures!

Hello everyone:)  I wanted to share some pictures of the students receiving their special gift from Mrs. Bolger and myself:)  Each child received a book, stickers, pencil, candy cane and a little toy.  We had a great time today in our pajamas, watching the polar express and eating some yummy treats (from the PBIS sale) during the movie as well.  Enjoy the pictures!
