Newsletter Week 8 (Recap and New Info)!
The students enjoying the leaves at recess:) Please scroll down and read under “Housekeeping Items” about coats, shoes and other clothing items…thank you!
Don’t forget to log onto Reading Eggs and Math Seeds daily! It is proven that students who use these programs, outperform their peers by 25%! Make sure your child is one step ahead of everyone else and not left behind! Also, please practice logging in with your child…your child will have to do this independently in the classroom:)
***Don’t forget: make sure to practice with your child how to put on and pull down their costume! They will be at school with the costume on all day, so we want to prevent any accidents happening! Practicing with your child how to independently take care of their needs in their costume, will prepare them for a successful and FUN Halloween. Thank you!
What we did during our week:
Language Arts: We had a fun week learning about letters F & U. We learned the letter name, words that start with each letter and the sound each letter makes. Next week we will focus on letters G and T:)
Writing: In writing, we are learning how to label our pictures! When labeling their pictures, the kids are stretching out the sounds they hear (like a rubber band) in the word parts. Make sure to practice this at home as well:) Here are some drawings the students labeled about their family. Enjoy:)
Math: We worked on lessons 20-27 in the classroom. Next week we will complete lessons 28-30.
Science: For October, we will learn about push & pull. This week we completed a C.E.R (Claim/Evidence/ Reasoning) chart and the students discussed and experienced what force is. After our lesson, the students completed a Push & Pull sorting sheet. We have been having fun learning about force!
Social Studies: For October, we will learn what it means to be a responsible citizen in our school/community:)
Halloween Celebration Note:
Dear Families, Our Halloween celebration will be on Wednesday October 31st, which means excited kids and parents too:) With all the excitement, we are listing the expectations for the day. Since we have seen an influx of food allergies in all the Kindergarten classrooms, we are asking families not to send your child with any treats to pass out to his/her friends. If by accident, your child sends a treat to school, we will kindly place it back in your child’s backpack to take home. Students are able to wear costumes for the day…YAY! We just ask that your child does not bring to school any weapons/wands/masks, accessories with the costume. If these are brought, we will kindly place them back into their backpacks. We encourage each and every family to practice with your child how to put on and take off your child’s costume since they will be in this costume throughout the duration of the school day. Make sure your child is in his/her costume at drop off! We will have a jam packed day, so the less disruptions the better:)
The Haigh Halloween parade will take place at 2:30 p.m. We encourage families to come out and watch the parade that will take place outside. There is no need to come into the building. We hope we answered some questions for this fun, filled day!
Thank you, Kindergarten & Young 5’s Team
Donors Choose Project: Our wobble stools are here and ready for us to use. I am still looking for the parent(s) who purchased these wobble stools, so I can personally thank them:) We are going to love them for small group instruction!
Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Oh My! Here are the pumpkin activities we did for the week. We are having so much fun learning all about pumpkins!
Thursday, October 25th: The students will be bringing home a pumpkin, donated by the PTA, on October 25th! I will have the students clean out the flesh, seeds and plant a flower inside the pumpkin as well:) Please dress your child for a day full of pumpkin fun; anything they can get dirty and have fun in! Thank you for your cooperation:)

Subject: Scholastic Book Clubs Class Order Due Date is approaching!
Dear Families,
This is a friendly reminder that your Book Clubs orders are due by 10/29/18. You can place your orders online at scholastic.com/bookclubs using my class activation code: RKYTJ
Other:
- Parent Teacher Conference reminders will be coming home soon! Please keep these reminders handy, so you are aware of your day and time! Thank you:)
- Reading bags will be coming home in the next 2 weeks! Be on the lookout:)
- Please consider buying something from our Scholastic Book Club at: https://clubs.scholastic.com/ Activation code: RKYTJ. The October orders are due by October 29th. There are a lot of great books for your child at a very reasonable price and FREE shipping. Books make for a great gift or even for a family story night:)
- Please make sure you are reviewing your child’s classwork each night. Monitoring your child’s classwork is a great indicator of how your child is doing in the class. If for some reason your child doesn’t finish his/her classwork in class, I will send it home for homework to be completed at home and returned the next day. Thank you for your support!
- Please make sure you are logging onto Reading Eggs/ RAZ Kids & Mathseeds frequently. Please teach your child how to independently log onto these sites on their own. They will learn how to type their username/password in the classroom, so if you could help me out at home with using the same method, I would greatly appreciate it! We are super lucky that our school has purchased these learning programs for our students at Haigh. I hope every family utilizes these sites often:)
- Please make sure to sign up for the Remind App for up to date texts from the classroom:) Here is how you sign up: Remind App. Here is the link and information needed to receive text messages straight from the classroom:) https://www.remind.com/join/mfillm
Housekeeping Items:
- Monday is our library check out date. I have a handful of students who do not bring in their books, which in turn leaves a very sad child without a new book for the week. If the book is not returned, there will be a cost to pay, if the book is not found. Please keep the library book in a safe place at home, or you can leave it in your child’s backpack until the next check out. Remember: Every Monday is our library check out. Thank you!
- The cold/winter season is upon us, which means cooler temperatures! With cooler temperatures comes coats, boots, hats, scarves, gloves, etc. It is important to teach your child how to properly put on a coat, zip up a coat, unzip the coat and take the coat off. We have a handful of students who constantly need help putting on their coats etc, which means more time is taken away from recess because the teacher is zipping up 24 coats! Also, please continue to practice tying shoes with your child. It is very hard to tie 2 pair of shoes X 24 students a day and multiple that by winter boots during our winter months! That equals 48 shoes a day I would be tying, which takes up a lot of time from our learning. We are encouraging students to become independent learners and with independence takes a lot of time and practice at home. Thank you for your cooperation:)
- If your child is bringing a home lunch, it is OK to pack a juice for the lunchroom! Remember to pack a reusable water bottle each day for the classroom:)
- Please pack your child’s snack SEPARATELY from your child’s home lunch. This will help your child become less confused about what is for lunch and what is for snack. Thank you:)
- Great news! The PTA has a blog for all sorts of fun information going on in the school. I may not have a lot of opportunities for all families to volunteer in the classroom, but the PTA is ALWAYS looking for extra hands to help in the school. Please take a look at their blog and sign up for the fun events they may need help with:) https://parents.dearbornschools.org/haigh/
