Newsletter Week 9 (Recap and New Info)!
Remember: There is NO SCHOOL tomorrow! Have a great weekend! See you back on Monday, Oct. 29th:)
Pumpkin Day 2018 was a BLAST! The students were able to pick their very own pumpkin, which were donated by the PTA! Next, Ms. Nikki and Mr. Rob cut out the stems for the students and prepped them for pumpkin cleaning:) After recess, the students were surprised with a table full of pumpkins and tools to clean the pumpkins. This day wouldn’t have been possible without the extra hands in my classroom. Thank you to Ms. Nikki for doing all the shopping for us and the planning/preparing for this day. Ms. Nikki used the fund money to buy the flowers and supplies, so the donated money is already off to a great start:) Thank you to Ms. Hanan for taking pictures of all the kids with their pumpkins and also to Ms. Amani, Ms. Salwa for helping with the set up and helping students during the cleaning process! We hope you enjoy the pictures and the plants that came home today:) I am sure you will enjoy your child’s recap of our awesome day!
What we did during our week:
Language Arts: We had a fun week learning about letters G & T. We learned the letter name, words that start with each letter and the sound each letter makes. Next week we will focus on letters H and S:)
Writing: We will begin to learn about sentence structure in the classroom. The students will learn that every sentence starts with an uppercase letter, finger spaces and a punctuation at the end of each sentence. Please practice this strategy at home as well with your child. Thank you!
Math: We worked on lessons 28-30 in the classroom. Next week we will complete lessons 31-34.
Science: For the reminder of the month, we will talk about positional words. Here is a video to help your child at home with positional words.
Social Studies: For October, we will learn what it means to be a responsible citizen in our school/community:)
Halloween Celebration Note:
Dear Families, Our Halloween celebration will be on Wednesday October 31st, which means excited kids and parents too:) With all the excitement, we are listing the expectations for the day. Since we have seen an influx of food allergies in all the Kindergarten classrooms, we are asking families not to send your child with any treats to pass out to his/her friends. If by accident, your child sends a treat to school, we will kindly place it back in your child’s backpack to take home. Students are able to wear costumes for the day…YAY! We just ask that your child does not bring to school any weapons/wands/masks, accessories with the costume. If these are brought, we will kindly place them back into their backpacks. We encourage each and every family to practice with your child how to put on and take off your child’s costume since they will be in this costume throughout the duration of the school day. Make sure your child is in his/her costume at drop off! We will have a jam packed day, so the less disruptions the better:)
The Haigh Halloween parade will take place at 2:30 p.m. We encourage families to come out and watch the parade that will take place outside. There is no need to come into the building. We hope we answered some questions for this fun, filled day!
Thank you, Kindergarten & Young 5’s Team
Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Oh My! Here are the pumpkin activities we did for the week. We had a blast during our pumpkin day:)
Scholastic Reading Club:
Class Code – RKYTJ Order Due Date – 10/29/18
Subject: Scholastic Book Clubs Class Order Due Date is approaching!
Dear Families, This is a friendly reminder that your Book Clubs orders are due by 10/29/18. You can place your orders online at scholastic.com/bookclubs using my class activation code: RKYTJ
Other:
- Parent Teacher Conference reminders will be coming home soon! Please keep these reminders handy, so you are aware of your day and time! Thank you:)
- Reading bags will be coming home in the next 2 weeks! There will be a note in the bag outlining how these will book bags work. Just to reiterate, these bags come home and come back to school every, single day. We use these during Daily 5 instruction. Please read these books at home with your child, and have them work on reading the books independently. We are working on one-to-one finger pointing. This mean that they should be pointing to each word as they read it. We are also working on reading words from left to right, using picture clues to help with “unknown” words, spotting sight words easily in text, stretching sounds out when coming to an unknown word and also retelling the story using the retell rope method! Make sure to jot down your child’s reading in the reading log each night! Thank you:)
- Please consider buying something from our Scholastic Book Club at: https://clubs.scholastic.com/ Activation code: RKYTJ. The October orders are due by October 29th. There are a lot of great books for your child at a very reasonable price and FREE shipping. Books make for a great gift or even for a family story night:)
- Please make sure you are reviewing your child’s classwork each night. Monitoring your child’s classwork is a great indicator of how your child is doing in the class. If for some reason your child doesn’t finish his/her classwork in class, I will send it home for homework to be completed at home and returned the next day. Thank you for your support!
- Please make sure you are logging onto Reading Eggs/ RAZ Kids & Mathseeds frequently. Please teach your child how to independently log onto these sites on their own. They will learn how to type their username/password in the classroom, so if you could help me out at home with using the same method, I would greatly appreciate it! We are super lucky that our school has purchased these learning programs for our students at Haigh. I hope every family utilizes these sites often:)
- Please make sure to sign up for the Remind App for up to date texts from the classroom:) Here is how you sign up: Remind App. Here is the link and information needed to receive text messages straight from the classroom:) https://www.remind.com/join/mfillm
Housekeeping items:
- Monday is our library check out date. I have a handful of students who do not bring in their books, which in turn leaves a very sad child without a new book for the week. If the book is not returned, there will be a cost the parent will have to pay. Please keep the library book in a safe place at home, or you can leave it in your child’s backpack until the next check out. Remember: Every Monday is our library check out. Thank you!
- The cold/winter season is upon us, which means cooler temperatures! With cooler temperatures comes coats, boots, hats, scarves, gloves, etc. It is important to teach your child how to properly put on a coat, zip up a coat, unzip the coat and take the coat off. We have a handful of students who constantly need help putting on their coats etc, which means more time is taken away from recess because the teacher is zipping up 24 coats! Also, please continue to practice tying shoes with your child. It is very hard to tie 2 pair of shoes X 24 students a day! That equals 48 shoes a day I would be tying, which would take up a lot of time during large and small group instruction. We are encouraging students to become independent learners and with independence takes a lot of dedication and teaching your child at home. Thank you for your cooperation:)
- If your child is bringing a home lunch, it is OK to pack a juice for the lunchroom! Remember to pack a water bottle each day for the classroom:)
- Please pack your child’s snack SEPARATELY from your child’s home lunch. This will help your child become less confused about what is for lunch and what is for snack. Thank you:)
- Great news! The PTA has a blog for all sorts of fun information going on in the school. I may not have a lot of opportunities for all families to volunteer in the classroom, but the PTA is ALWAYS looking for extra hands to help in the school. Please take a look at their blog and sign up for the fun events they may need help with:) https://parents.dearbornschools.org/haigh/
