Newsletter Week 5 (Recap and NEW Info)!

Picture day is this Monday, October 1st.  PLEASE make sure you have your child in his/her outfit you would like them to wear at drop off.  We take our pictures first thing in the morning, so coming in and changing your child in the outfit will not be permitted due to time and distractions.  Also, please make note that Monday is our gym day, so if you decide to have your child wear dress shoes, please pack them a pair of gym shoes to change into at school.  You may want to practice how to put on your child’s shoes, if they have never done so.  Thank you for your cooperation in this matter!  If you are not purchasing your child’s packet online (which is the easiest way), please make sure to fill out the order form and ADD tax to the final price.  Order forms are coming home today. Thank you!

**There will NO school for Kindergarten and Young 5’s this Friday.  We will see you all back on Monday:)

What we did during our week:

Language Arts: We had a fun week learning about letters C & X.  Next week we will focus on letters D and W:)

Writing:    In writing, we are learning how to write our names correctly inside the lines and also writing letters correctly inside the lines.  Please practice with your child how to write their name with the first letter being Uppercase and the remaining letters all lowercase.

Math:  We worked on lessons 10-13 in the classroom. Next week we will complete lessons 14-16.  After lesson 16, we will complete a mid module assessment for each child. We will resume with lesson 17 on October 9th:)

Science: All month long, we learned about our 5 senses: sight, touch, smell, taste and hear.  Today, we did a project to show all we learned about our 5 senses.  We hope you enjoy the picture of their work:)

Social Studies:  We will continue to go over our classroom rules each day: Looking eyes, hands to self, inside voices, listening ears and walking feet:)

Homework:   Every Monday, your child will come home with a homework packet. Your child will have a reading log to complete each night, a language art worksheet to complete each night and a homework assignment in their Eureka Math Succeed workbook each night as well.  Every Friday, your child’s homework packet is due, but they will keep their SUCCEED book at home with them. You will not bring the succeed workbook back to school.  It will stay at home throughout the whole school year. Dearborn Public Schools purchased a new math curriculum this year, so this will be a learning experience for all of us:)  Again, please keep the math book at home.  Thank you!

Kindergarten Parent Meeting:  Kindergarten will be holding our parent meeting on Tuesday, October 2nd from 8:00 – 8:30am.  Please enter through the front doors and walk down to the Media Center.  Mrs. Venkso and Mrs. Fillmore will present our grade level procedures and expectation.  Mrs. Dimitriou and Mrs. Sarafa will present on Young 5 and Kindergarten homework. Come to the meeting and find out how you can help support your child’s learning at home!

Donors Choose Project:  Our wobble stools are here and ready for us to use.  I am still looking for the parent(s) who purchased these wobble stools, so I can personally thank them:)  We are going to love them for small group instruction!

Classroom Celebration Fund:  Just a reminder that our classroom donation of $10 is due next Friday. Your donation will be utilized for the following celebrations in Mrs. Fillmore’s Room:

  •         Halloween
  •         Winter/Holiday
  •         Valentine’s Day
  •         100th Day of School
  •         End of School Year Picnic

Please return an attached envelope to school ($10 donation enclosed) in your child’s Everyday Folder by Friday, October 5th.  Thank you in advance for your contribution and assistance in making the 2018-19 school-year a fun-filled and memorable one for our Kindergartners!  If you have any fun ideas you would like to share or would like to help for one of our upcoming parties, please email Ms. Nikki or Ms. Hanan.  Thank you!

Thank you to the following families for already bringing in their classroom donation: Issa, Jude, Ave, Isra, Yusuf, Thomas, Ryan, Hassan and Jenin!

Scholastic Reading Club:

Class Code – RKYTJ     Order Due Date – 10/29/18

Subject: Scholastic Book Clubs Class Order Due Date is approaching!

Dear Families,

We have a new book order date for our book club: 10/29/18. You can place your orders online at scholastic.com/bookclubs using my class activation code: RKYTJ

Other:

  • Please consider buying something from our Scholastic Book Club at: https://clubs.scholastic.com/  Activation code: RKYTJ.  The October orders are due by October 29th.  There are a lot of great books for your child at a very reasonable price and FREE shipping.  Books make for a great gift or even for a family story night:) Thank you to Noor S and Jenin for purchasing books through our book club!
  • Please make sure you are reviewing your child’s classwork each night.  Monitoring your child’s classwork is a great indicator of how your child is doing in the class. If for some reason your child doesn’t finish his/her classwork in class, I will send it home for homework to be completed at home and returned the next day.  Thank you for your support!
  • Please make sure you are logging onto Reading Eggs/ RAZ Kids & Mathseeds frequently.   Please teach your child how to independently log onto these sites on their own. They will learn how to type their username/password in the classroom, so if you could help me out at home with using the same method, I would greatly appreciate it!  We are super lucky that our school has purchased these learning programs for our students at Haigh. I hope every family utilizes these sites often:)
  • Please make sure to sign up for the Remind App for up to date texts from the classroom:)  Here is how you sign up:  Remind App.  Here is the link and information needed to receive text messages straight from the classroom:) https://www.remind.com/join/mfillm

Housekeeping items:

    • If you send money in for your child’s school lunch, please place his/her money in an envelope, label your child’s first and last name on the envelope, my name (Mrs. Fillmore) and what the money’s for.  The lunch ladies have a lot of money to go through on a daily basis, so using this easy method will help with any confusion. We will also you this method for any field trips we may have during the school year.
    • If your child is bringing a home lunch, it is OK to pack a juice for the lunchroom!  Remember to pack a water bottle each day for the classroom:)
    • Please pack your child’s snack SEPARATELY from your child’s home lunch.  This will help your child become less confused about what is for lunch and what is for snack.  Thank you:)
    • Make sure to return your child’s library book, in their backpack, each MONDAY, so he/she is able to check a new one out for the week:)  If for some reason you lose the library book, the librarian will send home a slip of the book title and the cost you will have to repay.  Thank you!
    • PTA October calendar and October lunch calendar came home today in your child’s folder:)
  • Great news!  The PTA has a blog for all sorts of fun information going on in the school.  I may not have a lot of opportunities for all families to volunteer in the classroom, but the PTA is ALWAYS looking for extra hands to help in the school.  Please take a look at their blog and sign up for the fun events they may need help with:)  https://parents.dearbornschools.org/haigh/
  • Please read my blog post about tying shoes.  Thank you!
