What we did during our week:
Language Arts: We worked on -ot words and onset and rime. We have officially learned all the letters of the alphabet! Spelling words to study for next week: List 11: yes, by, want, this, bug, hug, mug, tug, slug. Please practice the extra cold -ug words, as there will be a cold word for number 10 on the test! Extra words: shrug, jug, pug, rug. Our 11th test will be Friday, March 16th.
Writing: In writing, we finished our star student book and are doing some more narrative writing in March! The 4 main components of narrative writing are: It’s written by the character, it’s written about real life events, it’s written in sequential order: first, next and last and lastly, it’s written with feelings.
Math: We will continue to talk about subtraction and addition in March, but I will also introduce greater than/less than as well. We have a little bit of everything during our math workshop: count the room, smash it! subtraction, addition, missing numbers, etc.
Math Quizzes: We have a math quiz on Friday, March 16th on math facts +10! After our +10 test, we will go into subtraction -0. Please make the flashcards at home for your child to help them prepare for their math quiz. For extra practice at home (instead of the flash cards), you could also use counters (or food) for a visual representation of the math equation for your child. You can also practice with your child by having them put the big number in their head and the small number on their hands and then count up. Try to make it fun! Thank you for supporting your child with their addition skills!
Science: We will be wrapping up our Polar Climate this month! The students will be tested on their knowledge of Polar Animals at the end of the month!
Social Studies: We are having fun learning about maps and drawing maps!
March is Reading Month: Your child came home with a “Paws for Reading” packet. In this packet is a special calendar with all kinds of exciting reading activities you can do at home with your child! Also, you will see a 2018 March Reading Log to keep track of your child’s reading minutes at home. Each child who returns their reading log by Wednesday, April 11th will earn a special prize, if they have reached their recommended reading goal for the month. The Kindergarten reading goal is 20 minutes per day...I know we can do it! Make sure to jot the minutes down on the reading log calendar and on the homework as well:)

- UPDATE: I do not have any more available spots for guest readers. The last 2 slots were filled today! Thank you to the families who have already signed up and who have already read to our kiddies:) Here are pictures of Ms. Amal, Ms. Ashley and Ms. Leticia ending our week of guest readers. Thank you Ms. Amal, Ms. Ashley and Ms. Leticia!:
- Parent Teacher Conferences will be by invite only! Since I only have 1 day for conferences, I will reach out to the families I need to speak with during the conference day. If you do not get an invite, have no fear, I will still send home a comprehension handout to better help your child become a retelling pro and also a current standing on what sight words your child can recognize!
- Out of 22 students today, who took the spelling test, 16 received a 100% and 5 students only missed 1 to 2 words!! This is a TOTAL victory! Way to go to my students and parents who worked so hard to ensure their child was successful for the Friday spelling test! I will send the booklet home on Monday for you all to see how your child did:). Remember, to look over your child’s spelling test booklet, sign on the line and return the booklet in the green folder the very next day (TUESDAY)! It is imperative I receive them all back the next day! Thank you!
- Out of 22 students today, we had 12 students receive a 100% on their math quiz +9! If your child is not performing at 70% or above, I suggest making flash cards for your child to practice at home with! Way to go to my 12 students. I am so proud of you!!
- Please consider buying something from our Scholastic Book Club at: scholastic.com/bookclubs Activation code: RKYTJ. Our due date for book orders will be Wednesday, March 21st. There are a lot of great books for your child at a very reasonable price ($1 books) and FREE shipping. Thank you to Jad’s family for buying something from our book club:)
Housekeeping items:
-
- If your child’s green folder is falling apart, please use some packaging tape to put the folder back together, or please purchase another green folder for you child. Some folders are torn in half and is difficult to place work and or important notes in your child’s folder. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter!
- On Gym Days (Thursday and Friday), please make sure to send your child to school in Gym Shoes! Mr. Peecher will have the kids sit on the stage if they are not wearing appropriate gym attire. Your child’s safety is our main priority. Thank you!
- Parents, I need your help! When you send in money for your child, whether it be for lunch, lunchroom snacks, field trip, please enclose the money in an ENVELOPE with your child’s FIRST and LAST name on the front, indicate what the money is for and write my name as well: Mrs. Fillmore. This will cause for less confusion for the lunch room and for the classroom. Thank you!
- Please make sure to log onto math seeds and reading eggs when there is downtime at home, especially on the weekends! I have laminated and attached logins/passwords for EACH child on their communication log this week! Please keep this in a safe place, so it doesn’t get lost. These programs are free for you to use, how awesome is that? All you need to do is to show your child how to log in and they can begin learning! Parents, in the classroom, I am trying to teach each child to login typing their own username and password…independence is the name of the game! If you could be so kind, to help your child do the same at home, it would help so much! Thank you!
- March 16th will be our next library check out date!
