Sometimes pennies want to go sailing too. The students in Mrs. Donelson’s class were assigned with the STEM based task of designing a boat for their little copper friends.
The Process
- Students had to develop two boat designs that would support 20 pennies
- They had to list their materials and the properties of each material
- Designs needed to be shared and collaborated on with a partner
- Finally, the boat was created
- Students learned through the process of trial and error
“You try, you fail, you try, you fail…but the only true failure is when you stop trying.” -Madame Leota from Disney’s the Haunted Mansion

Adam K.’s boat sank (not unlike a tiny Titanic), but Natalie’s was success on the first try.

Benicio made a BAT BOAT to hold his 20 pennies! Whoa there, Batman!
The great difference between the childlike look of failure versus the sweet joy of success.
