Parent Informational Meetings
Good morning,
We will be continuing our parent informational meetings again this year. However, they will be slightly tweaked based on feedback last year. I will be sending out a survey shortly asking what you would like to be informed on and we will work to accommodate.
Additionally, we will be hosting 3 informational meetings on NWEA throughout the school year. This will be specific to your child’s class. The first meeting is on October 14th from 3:45-5:15. We will have child care available. We will also have light food and refreshments. Please be sure to mark this on your calendar as this is essential information. We will be sending multiple reminders leading up to the 14th.
thank you,
Dr. Tynan
Healthy Habits
Good afternoon,
As we continue to encourage healthy habits, we are increasing our corner coverage to encourage students to walk or bike to and from school. We are also actively trying to hire adult corner captains for before and after school.
Here are the list of corners that are currently covered to ensure your child’s safety:
1) Penn, Academy, and Madison – In front of Nowlin
2) Notre Dame, Grindley and Madison – North of Nowlin
4) Syracuse and Penn – West side of Nowlin
5) Grindley and Penn – One block east of Nowlin
Additionally, we will begin offering incentives for students to bike or walk to school. The items include the following American Made items: bike helmets, insulated water bottles, bike repair kits, bike lights and other such items.
Thank you,
Dr. Tynan
Welcome
August 27, 2019
Dear Families,
Welcome to a new year!! My name is Mr. Dan May and I have been an educator for over 27 years; three of those years have been right here at Nowlin. I feel very fortunate to begin this school year with such an esteemed group of students. I have heard many wonderful things about our upcoming 3th grade and can’t wait to hit the ground running.
Please visit my blog @ iblog.dearbornschools.org/mrmay/ for updates and classroom highlights. I can also be contacted before or after school at our main office number and your call will be transferred to my room. Please know that I pride myself on having a grasp on the social “happenings” of the classroom, however, if you have any concerns or questions, please contact me at once; chances are you may hear something before I do.
I hope you are as excited as I am for this school year and look forward to meeting you at our Open House on Thursday, September 12th, from 6:00-7:30
Sincerely,
Mr. May

Summer Learning: Math and Literacy
Dear Parent/Guardian,
According to Johns Hopkins University, the effects of summer learning loss can result in nearly a three-month loss in grade-level equivalency in math and a two-month loss in grade-level equivalency in reading. In order to close the summer learning loss gap in reading and math, middle school students will be expected to complete Summer Learning before they return in the fall. Teachers will grade the completed summer work when school opens in August. Below are the expectations for math and literacy. Thank you so much for supporting your child’s development through summer learning.
Math:
- Complete 60 minutes of Khan Academy practice a week (Practice only, videos will not count), based on their NWEA level.
- Students need to access Khan through Clever from the Dearborn Schools Student page.
DO NOT LOG IN FROM THE STUDENT’S PERSONAL ACCOUNT
Below is the grade breakdown by minutes for Math. 480+ minutes A 384 – 479 B 336 – 383 C 288 – 335 D |
Literacy:
- Read 3-5 books from your building’s recommended reading list.
Be prepared to present a Book Talk in September when you return to school.

Parent Involvement
Our last parent involvement meeting of the year will take place this Thursday, May 23, 2019 at 8:45 a.m. and at 3:45 p.m. in the media center. Our Topic this meeting with be on Summer Safety: Fun Summer Ideas To keep your Child Active, yet Safe. We look forward to seeing those who are able to attend!
O.L. Smith PTSA Meeting Tonight – May 14th at 6:30pm
Incoming 6th grade O.L. Smith parents are invited to attend the final PTSA meeting of the year tonight in the Smith media center at 6:30 pm. You can hear about some of the great initiatives and projects that are going on at Smith, and you’ll have a chance to get the pulse of the school from administration, teachers, and current board members. You don’t need to be a current PTSA member to join us. Everyone is invited to attend!
PTA
Please take a few minutes to nominate yourself, another parent/friend, or a teacher who you would like to see be on the PTA board next year. OurPTA has the minimum number of board members required by the bylaws and some parents are either at their term limit or are leaving Nowlin. Itwould be extremely sad to lose all of the PTA sponsored and planned events, as well as all of the funds they raise every year for things in thebuilding. Many of you are unaware that the PTA has started a bank account for each grade to help cover the costs of 5th-grade camp. Your4th graders already have 2 years worth of deposits. That is huge for the families who couldn’t afford to send their children otherwise. We have provided classroom rugs, supplies, busses for each grade to go on a field trip, new library books for the media center and classroom, we run book bingos, Fall Fest, Santa Shoppe, donate food for field day, collect food for the less fortunate, buy filtered water drinking stations, handle 5th-grade promotion ceremony and much more! Without enough board members, these things could stop happening. Please consider filling out the followingform to keep Nowlin PTA up and running for all Nowlin Families. A nomination does not mean they have to accept, it means we can have a dialog with the person. Thanks, and if you have questions, let a PT Board Member know at our May 1st Election Meeting! Deadline to vote is April 30th, the day before the election. Come to the meeting with your questions, comments, and concerns! We know we can do better and that is why we need new members to join!
