Posted by Danny May on September 7, 2020 in Class News |

Good afternoon Haigh families.

This week we begin our normal schedule and begin instruction. Tuesday we will go through Schoology and access Zoom from a link found there. This will be the link that students will use the rest of the year to get to their Zoom meetings. Starting Wednesday, students will log in to Schoology, find my course and click the link at the times on the schedule. As a reminder, we will also be setting norms for attending Zoom meetings each day.

This week we are also going to begin to schedule meetings in the afternoon from 1:35-3:30 to assess students in reading. Please check out the sign up genius and find a time that works for you. Please note that students must wear a mask when entering the building and parents will be asked to wait outside of the building. Each sign up is scheduled for 25 minutes.

Reminders for the week:

  • Please check your email daily for notifications from me. The Zoom code for Tuesday will be there ( For safety measures I cannot post the link on my blog)  For the rest of the week and moving forward we will use the link button in my Schoology course.
  • Please begin to familiarize yourself with Schoology.
  • Please sign up on a date and time that works best for you to bring your child to the building to assessed in reading click here
  • Please ensure your child has a set spot that is comfortable, neat, and organized each day for their remote learning classroom.

Below you will find a copy of the learning for the week. Please keep in mind that this is just a plan for the week and may change due to issues with technology or a task taking longer than expected. I will be doing live lessons from 9:00-10:25 and 10:30-11:45. If possible, please have your child on time with a whiteboard, marker, and a designated notebook for a reading response notebook. They will also need math notebooks near them during the math block.

Summer Learning

According to Johns Hopkins University, the effects of summer learning loss can result in nearly a three-month loss in grade-level equivalency in math and a two-month loss in grade-level equivalency in reading.

As a result of the school shut down, estimates suggest students will return in the fall 2020 with roughly 70% of the learning gains in reading relative to a typical school year.  However in mathematics, students are likely to show much smaller learning gains and in some grades, nearly a full year behind what we would observe in normal conditions. In order to close the summer learning loss gap in reading and math, students should be reading on a daily basis and or completing math activities for roughly 20 minutes per day per subject. Below are recommended reading and math activities.

Reading:

  • ReadWorks
  • RazKids
  • Espark
  • EPIC
  • Freckle
  • KhanAcademy ELA/Grammar
  • Any Books of Choice

Math:

  • Zearn
  • Freckle
  • Espark
  • KhanAcademy
  • XtraMath
  • Flashcards

Thank you so much for supporting your child’s development through summer learning.

Also, I needed to say; this has been one of the best years of my career in teaching; minus the last three months.  Your children are a wonder community of people.  They are strong in learning, compassion and respect for one another.  I truly have considered this year as an honor and a blessing to have had such wonderful people.  Have a safe and restful summer.

Library Books and Chromebooks

There will be a box, for book return, set outside starting tomorrow and Wednesday from 9:30-2:30. We are in the process of rebuilding our library and continue to invest money into it. Having the books returned to us will be extremely beneficial and much appreciated.

As far as the chromebooks are concerned, please hold on to them for now so that your child can access on line summer learning to assist in decreasing any summer learning loss. We will collect the chromebooks in the fall.

A Post from Dr.Maleyko

Greetings,

The weekend is here and although the weather forecast is calling for rain, we all like to get outside and get some fresh air. This is especially true during this time of year when the temperatures are on the rise and we all have been spending a lot of time inside.

Many are thinking that it might be alright to get outside and have children play with one or two friends. Unfortunately, this is not something we should be doing at this time. The battle to stop the spread of the COVID 19 virus is on-going and gathering in small groups, even outside at the local park is not something we should be doing.

During the State of Michigan mandated shut down, all Dearborn Public School facilities, including playgrounds, and athletic fields, will be closed to the public. Please do not attempt to go onto the fields or access the playgrounds.  If you are found on the property you will be asked to leave.

The Governor has ordered that we all shelter in place.  This is not a recommendation or suggestion. This action is being taken to help in the effort to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus and to mitigate the number of people becoming sick. Hospitals in southeastern Michigan are being overwhelmed and are reaching the point where they are unable to meet the needs of those arriving for care. We must all do our part to help slow the spread of this virus and remain at home!

The Governor did say that it is ok to go for a walk, run, or bike ride. However, we can not gather in groups at local parks or playgrounds.

We look forward to the day, hopefully in the not too distant future, when our facilities will once again be open to the public and we can all return to our regular routines. The District appreciates all of the support that the Dearborn community has shown and the tremendous amount of community spirit that has been demonstrated during this very difficult time.  Together we will get through this, one community, #DearbornStrong!

March 27th

I have added a link onto Google Classroom for our Google Hangout on Friday, March 27th. Only the first 20 minutes are useful for our math lesson. Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Friday’s at 10:00 will be our regular times to meet. I’m looking for ways to streamline and make our access easier.  I hope to have all the bugs worked out soon. Thank you for your patience. Stay safe and healthy.

COVID 19 Virus (coronavirus)

Posted by Danny May on March 13, 2020 in Class News |

Greetings,

All Dearborn Public Schools will be closed for students effective immediately, March 13, 2020. This is a result of Governor Whitmer’s order to close all K-12 school buildings, public, private, and boarding, starting Monday, March 16 until Sunday, April 5.

Dearborn Public Schools spring break will take place from Monday, April 6 through Friday, April 10. Students will return to school on Monday, April 13, 2020.

Students may report on Friday, March 13, 2020 at the normal start time to pick up their belongings and school supplies.

All staff should report on Friday, March 13, 2020 to assist students. Staff will only attend for the morning half of the day followed by a half day release time.  All staff should continue to check their email daily for updates and information.

As of Thursday, 3-12-2020 there are no reported or confirmed cases of COVID 19 in the Dearborn Public Schools.

This closure of schools is part of a nationwide effort to slow the spread of the COVID 19 virus. These actions will not eliminate the COVID 19 virus, cure COVID 19,  and this will not guarantee that a person will not contract the COVID virus at a later time. Again, these actions are part of a nationwide effort to slow the spread and limit the number of people who will become infected.

Thank you
