Chem4kids Element Search

Today in class we began our research into understanding Elements and The Periodic Table. This site is a helpful tool when wanting to find out the different uses of elements, to understand that they are more than just names on a table.

Missed Emails

Families,

I wanted to take a moment to apologize for any emails I have have missed over the break. I was away form my computer for most of the break with the intentions of answering anything on my phone. As luck would have it, I broke my phone on Thanksgiving, upon switching to a new phone, my email notification settings did not feel the need to transfer over. If it was something that is still relevant today, I will be sure to answer them.

Again, my apologies!

-Mr. Bailey

A Few Announcements Before the Break!

Hello students and families,

I just wanted to make a couple of announcements since I will be unable to do so due to lack of school.

STUDENTS

You were given a NewsELA article about pollution in class today. The reading and all accompanying  assignments are due Monday, November 27th. Along with the reading you are asked to

  • HIGHLIGHT MAIN IDEAS
  • ANSWER THE QUIZ QUESTIONS
  • WRITE TO ANSWER THE WRITING PROMPT

These will be 3 grades in the grade book.

STUDENTS AND PARENTS

Announcement 1

Last week, students were given envelopes containing raffle tickets. These are ticket for our PTA fundraiser for the year. Instead of magazine sales, we will be having a raffle to raise money for the school. Each ticket is $2 and they will be entered for a chance to win either $500 or $250. Thanksgiving is a great time to mention this fundraiser to family members and provides the PTA with the funds needed to make Bryant Middle School excel in the classroom, as well as through our extracurricular activities. Please help support our WONDERFUL PTA.

Announcement 2

The Seventh Grade will be going on a field trip to Wayne State University to see A Christmas Carol performed on stage. Permission slips were given out to students last week, and need to be collected by November 27th. Along with the permission slip is the $20 cost, covering transportation costs, ticket, and pizza upon arrival back to Bryant.

Of course, Thanksgiving is most importantly a time for family and to reflect on the good in your life. I want to wish everyone an excellent Thanksgiving, may your time together be great, and your meals even greater :-). See you in 5 days!

-Mr. Bailey

The following is an email about the event, and a request for anyone willing to volunteer. While the message asks you to contact Kidada Simmons, please feel free to contact me as well.

Hello All,

The District is honored to be hosting 36 FTC (middle school teams) in a state qualifier AND an exhibition for 14 FLL Jr. (K-2) teams from around the state. (OK, a lot of letters there so please see the attached Press Release for details, but in short, this is a really cool and important robotics event at McCollough/Unis on December 9thAND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We ONLY have 20 VOLUNTEERS signed up for our December 8-9 event and we NEED at least 120 VOLUNTEERS.

FIRST events are volunteer-driven. 99% of FIRST workers are volunteers.   Please recruit volunteers 13 YEARS OLD and OLDER.  Go to https://www.mcubots.us/volunteers  for detailed steps on how to register.

Try to have volunteers registered by MONDAY, NOVEMBER 27th.  FIRST requires that all volunteers go through screening/background check during volunteer registration.  It usually take about a week for each volunteer to be screened online.

ACTIVELY RECRUIT VOLUNTEERS by posting this information on your Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, and blogs.  Family, friends, staff, students, and community members can all be volunteers.    Also, mention this during meetings with staff, parents, and community members. Making a mini-Book

Students,

If you were absent today and would like to be as caught up as you can be at home, all it requires is a sheet of computer paper. We began our creation of an atomic theory mini book.

To see how to create the book, check out this video.

Once completed, title your book “The Development of The Atomic Theory” and draw a picture related to an atom (a quick Google Search should cover that).

We will begin filling the book in class tomorrow!

Hey guys,

I just wanted to take a second to upload a Jeopardy powerpoint I had used in the past related to chemical and physical changes. Some information on here was not covered in class, but much of it will serve as a useful review!

Remax Hot air Balloon Demonstration

Today our students had the opportunity to see an up-close look at the science of a Hot Air Balloon.  Balloon Pilot Shawn Raya explained the science  and history behind a hot air balloon.  The 90,000 square foot balloon started out flat on the Bryant football field.  After the balloon was  filled students were able to have a closer look at the balloon.  This presentation was made possible by RE/MAX real estate agent Raad Alawan.
