Welcome Back and Happy 2020!

This week we completed 1/2 of our Math unit so a mid module quiz will take place for 2nd graders on Monday. A review study guide will come home today.

In Social St. We continued out History of early Michigan with the French and British, the Native American legends, the Fur trade and we will continue our unit with Michigan becoming a State next week.

Reading groups were revised and many students moved up! Keep up the great work. I do send 1 book home and they have an assignment due the following week. If they finish it early they can get a new book but I do not want to pressure the 2nd graders, having said that, they are all working so very hard I am beyond impressed. 3rd graders, try to keep up lol

In writing we wrote narratives on any topic they wanted, next week we will begin research writing.

Also next week, we will begin NWEA assessments again. I am going to start with Reading because I am super excited to see their growth!

Hope you have a great weekend and keep healthy. So far my girls have NOT been well (one with the flu and the other with a virus that now needs steroids). Fingers crossed this ends soon!

1 last thing! I am sending home a permission slip for a field trip that takes place in March. The money is due next week so please return it ASAP. Thanks again!!

The gift exchange is in the morning so send the present to school with your child. Also, if you are sending in a snack for the party we are eating in the morning:)

The students will be going to music first thing, then we have a little assembly listening to a guest reader read The Grinch. From 10-11:40 we will have our snacks and exchange gifts. we will finish our gifts to you and then go to lunch. After lunch we will do a craft, begin Harry Potter, decorate cookies and wrap our presents. Then, at 2:30 is the school sing-a -long in the gym. Please join us for the sing-a-long!

There will be no homework over break, we all need a rest! But, encourage your child to read and talk about what they are reading.

I hope you all have a wonderful vacation with your families. And, if you celebrate Christmas Merry Christmas! Happy New Year to all!

Homework

Parents, please continue to check your child’s planners. Many of my students are “forgetting” to do their homework or are “too busy”. Unfortunately homework is the nature of the beast for 2nd graders. They had a writing assignment that was originally a classroom assignment. But, the kiddos didn’t know how to get home. So, because this is a part of social studies for both 2nd and 3rd grade geography, I told the students to complete it with an adult over the weekend. The directions were to tell us how you get home from school. Please have them use direction words from social studies: turn left, turn right, go north, south, east, west etc.

This week is spirit week:

Tomorrow is Holiday Socks Day.

In math we will begin subtraction, in reading we are continuing with focusing on comprehension. In writing we are producing opinion papers on naughty vs. nice and supporting your opinions. We are creating candy cane poems and studying weather in science ( In this Mystery, students explore the effects of natural hazards, such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and dust storms. We will construct a model of a house that will withstand a tornado). Finally, in social studies we are discussing the French Fur trade and their relationship with the Native American’s in Michigan).

Thank you for all you do! I know it is a hectic time of year, the students are CRAZY excited for the holidays and I will do my best to keep things as easy as possible this week for you.
