Operation Gratitude Halloween Give-Back

Campaign Underway Candy for a Cause  Teaching children the value of giving back by donating Halloween candy in support of Operation Gratitude is a win-win for kids and parents . This Halloween, local trick-or-treaters will join kids across the country when they donate their extra Halloween candy to Operation Gratitude at DuVall Elementary. The sweet treats will be included along with handwritten thank you letters in Care Packages sent to U.S. Service Members deployed overseas, and hand delivered to Veterans and First Responders serving in their local communities. Americans spend an estimated $2.5 billion dollars on a whopping 600 million pounds of Halloween candy each year. In 2018, more than 440,000 pounds of candy was donated to Operation Gratitude and distributed to America’s heroes in signature Operation Gratitude Care Packages and local deliveries around the country. “Operation Gratitude’s mission is to thank all who serve, forging strong bonds between grateful Americans and the Heroes who serve and protect them,” according to Kevin Schmiegel, Lieutenant Colonel, USMC (Ret.) and CEO of Operation Gratitude. “The Halloween Candy Give-Back Program provides every American child the opportunity to learn about service, sacrifice and generosity.”

We will be collecting candy in the office November 1st-4th

Camp Info.

Here is a link to the packing list for camp if you have lost your original. ONLY pack what is on the list or less. All students are required to carry their own stuff, lighter is better!

Packing list

We leave one week from Monday (on Oct. 21). Students should be here by 7:50. They SHOULD have their lunch and items for on the bus in a small back pack. All medicine should be in a ziploc bag with exact directions for taking and your child’s name on it. Give it to Mrs. Ranka when you arrive Monday. Pillows should be in their bags, not for on the bus. Put sleeping bag/pillow in some sort of bag labeled with your child’s name. Remember, if you use a garbage bag, they usually all look alike, so attach something to make your child’s stand out. Watch the weather forecast and pack accordingly. We will load bus by 8 and leave by 8:15.

We will return between 3:45-4:45 on Wednesday. You will receive a phone call when we are 1/2 hour away. Please be on time to get your child and DO NOT park where the bus will unload.

We are excited and will have a great time, don’t worry! 🙂

I know it is still a few weeks away – but I wanted to plan ahead so you can join us if at all possible. We have our “party” first thing in the day as a breakfast – Thursday, October 31st 8:45 – 10:00. This helps so you can be available for other classes in the afternoon if you have younger students. Please check out the sign up genius below to help with our feast. Thank you!!!

Please remember to check labels when purchasing the food items – they MUST be nut free. Thank you!

We need about 4-5 volunteers who can take the call when we are about 1/2 hour away and begin the fan out calls. If you will be home and able to make about 8 phone calls to let parents know we are almost home please email Mrs. Ranka at rankac@dearbornschools.org and late next week you will get a list of numbers to call. Also, your child can bring $30 in spending money if they would like to purchase a hoodie or t-shirt while at camp. You can put it in an envelope with your child’s name on the outside and hand it to Mrs. Ranka as the students get on the bus on Monday, October 21. Make sure your child knows that they have spending money. Thanks in advance.
