Let’s Go Red Wings!

Today we had our Red Wings assembly about Education and Dedication. It was so much fun! They gave us hockey equipment for the gym and we got to meet Miss Wilson’s best friend! The teachers played hockey against the students and the students won.

This week we did a lot of learning!

Reading – In reading this week we talked about problem and solution. We also learned how to retell a story in order using first, next, then and last. Of course, during Daily 5 we were doing read to self, read to someone, work on writing and word word.

Writing – This week in writing we finished realistic fiction and we started opinion writing! We learned that an opinion is how you feel or what you think. A fact is something you can prove. Next week we are going to write out own opinion papers.

Math – We practiced frames and arrows this week in math. We learned how to fill in the pattern and name the rule. We also practiced name collection boxes. There are many ways we can write a number. Today we practiced two digit story problems.

Social Studies – We reviewed what we know about communities and we took a test! Everyone did really well!

Science – In science this week we learned more about mixtures. We made a snack mixture and we had to separate all the parts. We also learned about different tools you can use to separate mixtures like a sieve. We also reviewed what we know about solutions. \

Science Friday

Good afternoon parents! Happy Friday!

This week we did a lot of learning we would like to share with you.

Reading: This week at Daily 5 we practiced a new strategy! We learned about the retelling rope. When we retell a story we should include the characters, setting and problem. We are going to learn the rest of the retelling rope next week. We all got new books and new strategies to help us become better readers.

Writing: In writing this week we wrote new stories. We wrote stories that included characters, setting, problems and solution. We got to make up stories called realistic fiction stories. The characters are pretend but the problems are real. Our stories were about fall and Halloween.

Math: This week in math we spent a lot of time practicing doubles plus one and doubles minus one. We learned about writing numbers into expanded form. We also learned how to add two digit numbers using the tens and the ones.

Science: Science was so fun! We learned about mixtures. Mixtures are objects mixed together but we can separate the materials. When you cannot separate the materials it is called a solution. We made a mystery liquid with water and white crystals. We used our senses to observe the liquid and came to the conclusion that the liquid was Kool-aid. We knew Kool-aid was a solution because we couldn’t take the sugar back out. Here are pictures of us creating and observing our mystery liquid!

Social Studies: We put up our community murals in the hall and reviewed facts about communities. Here are pictures of them in the hallway.

Happy Peace Day!

This week we talked about bullying and how we are going to all be upstanders! Today we had a peace assembly with the whole school.

What we learned this week:

Reading – This week we have been reading realistic fiction stories. At Daily 5 we practice reading to self and reading to someone. When we read we practice our CAFE strategies! We are part 2 of The Year of Billy Miller but we still have 150 pages to go!

Writing – This week in writing we have been writing realistic fictions stories. We learned realistic fictions stories have characters, setting, problem and solution. The characters in realistic fiction stories do real things and act like real people.

Math – In math this week we started number talks. Number talks are going to help learn math facts and talk about addition strategies. We practiced using +10 to solve +9 facts. We also practiced using double facts to help us solve other facts. Yesterday learned about even and odd and how to use the buddy buddy, no buddy strategy.

Social Studies – We have been talking about communities. This week we talked about cities, suburbs and small towns. We even painted murals of the different communities for the hallway! Here are pictures of us working hard on them:
