What a busy week!

It has been so long since we have posted on the blog! We had to squeeze a lot of learning into only 3 days!

Writing – We finished our winter poems this week! We wrote cinquain poems and illustrated them using water colors 🙂

Math – We worked on story problems where we have to find the difference. We compared the quantity diagram to fact families. We also presented our shape projects to all of the fourth graders! We set them around the room like a shape museum. Lastly, we worked on graphing! We made bar graphs of all of our favorite foods.

Social Studies – We started our unit about past and present! We read about people who lived in the past. We are going to learn more about history!

Reading – In reading we are learning about how characters change throughout the story. Character has different traits in the beginning of the story than they do at the end of the story. The events in the story cause the characters to change. Also we switched reading groups! We are all moving up levels 🙂 We are almost finished with Charlotte’s Web! We only have 9 pages left! We are so excited to finish and watch the movie next week.

Science – We did a gummy bear experiment. We let the gummy bears sit in water overnight and in the morning they grew! They were almost twice as big. They were even more squishy.

Coming up:

– We are so excited we are getting a new student on Monday! His name is Adam so we are going to have two Adams now.

– On Friday, we are going to have a Valentine’s Day breakfast just for us! We are going to decorate bags and we can all bring in Valentines for our everyone in the class.

December 5

14 days until winter break!

We had a VERY busy week after our great long weekend!

Math – This week in math we practiced story problems! We learned many different kind of problems and some of them had two parts. We also learned we have to say the unit we are counting. We have been practicing addition and subtraction strategies at number talks too!We have been using open number lines to help us.

Social Studies – We talked about consequences in Social Studies this week. There are positive consequences and negative consequences. People can change the environment and cause positive and negative consequences. We also talked about regions like our community, state and country. We also took our social studies test. We all did great!

Reading – We have been practicing making a picture in our heads. We put many pictures together to make a mini movie in our heads. We can use our picture to help us answer questions about a story. We started listening to reading on Miss Wilson’s iPad. Her and the other teachers are recording themselves reading our books so we can listen and follow along. Some of us have started practicing books so we can record them on the iPad. Last in reading we started Charlotte’s Web! We all got copies so we can follow along as Miss Wilson reads!

Writing – In writing this week we learned about the words compare and contrast. We can compare and contrast two things by writing about how they are the same and how they are different. We also practiced adding two details for each transition in our stories.

Science – We watched a video about land forms. Some of the land forms we learned about were mountains, volcanoes, and canyons. Today we looked at types of water on earth and got to taste it!

This was an awesome week for us to learn!

Looking ahead:

– PBIS party will be December 18th. Students have to have less than 4 yellow flips.

– Winter party will be December 19th.

Thanks for reading!

Clock Workshop

Hello parents! We have some learning to fill you in on!

Writing: In writing we have been working on our opinion. We learned about different pets we could have in our classroom. We found facts about a goldfish and a guinea pig. Then we wrote our opinion on which type of animal would be a better pet for the classroom.

Math: In math we have been learning about clocks. We have been doing worksheets and playing games with clocks. In clocks we have been learning about the hour hand and minute hand. The numbers around the clock count by 5s. We have also been doing graphs and learning about data. We learned about mode and median. Last, we have been learning about money! We counted money and made different coin amounts. We decided how to spend out money when we had to buy items.

Science: We finished talking about mixtures and properties. This week we started talking about water! We learned there are different kinds of water like salt water, fresh water from polar ice caps and glaciers and fresh water from the ground. did you know 97% of the earths water is salt water? Only 3% of water is fresh for drinking.

Social Studies: We finished our unit about communities! We are going to start learning about maps.

Reading: The new strategy we are working on this week is inferring! To infer means to use what we already know. We can infer what a character is feeling based on their actions or expressions.

That’s what we have learned this week!
