As our Early Childhood Specialist, ECS, has begun to work with our developing readers in kindergarten, we’re reminded to explicitly teach before we prompt. Sounds simple yet many of us prompt our children when they’re “stuck” without a foundation of instruction for them to rely upon. Before we ask, “Does that make sense?” we need to ensure that our students have a grasp of what that really means. An example of teaching this would sound like, “You said _______. That doesn’t make sense in the story.” or “You said _______. That doesn’t go with this part of the story.” After teaching this skill a prompt may sound more like, “Think about what would make sense in this story.”
