Writing With a Purpose

I considered myself a writer when I had a purpose and an authentic audience. I wish that I could say that this happened in kindergarten but I actually found the power of the written word in high school. How can we help our elementary students become writers? Make it authentic!

Provide Authentic Writing Opportunities:

-The writing task needs to be engaging and have a clear purpose. This will give students the opportunity to write about something that they have knowledge of.

Ensure That There is a Real Audience:

-We need to know our audience when we’re writing. The tone and language a student will use for friends and classmates is very different from those used with family members or business owners.
