Assignment Update 3/20

I have given feedback and scores for all assignments turned in by 4pm today. On Google Classroom, if I have received your work for any assignment, you should see a score out of 4 for that assignment.

If you were missing an assignment at 4pm today, I sent an email home to you and your family. There are not penalties for turning work in late right now, but it is important for me to keep everyone up to date about our Social Studies work!

Please let me know if you need help or if you are having trouble understanding the assignments or my feedback!

Have a great weekend 🙂

Friday, 3/20

  1. It’s beautiful outside! See if you can go for a walk 🙂
  2. Make sure your Asia Review is completed
  3. Complete your Asia Assessment
  4. Check your grades — if you do not like your CER grade, please let me know so I can give you a redo assignment
  5. I will be releasing scores for those of you who have already completed the Asia Assessment shortly. Look for this and a message on how to make corrections 🙂
  6. I will also be sending emails to families of students who have not completed ANY WORK for my class so far.
  7. As always, I’m here for you if you wanna chat or share anything 🙂

CNN10: Today’s subjects on CNN 10: addressing misinformation about coronavirus, observing wartime measures to contain disease, and escorting a group of ducks to safety.

In class, whenever we watch CNN10, we have a discussion of what we learned afterward using the following sentence starters. You may want to watch CNN10 with someone at home and talk about it!

  • Summarize: One story was …
  • Connect: The story about … made me think of … because …
  • Predict: After seeing the story about … I think … because …
  • Question: After seeing the story about … I am wondering …

Stay well, everyone!

Thursday, 3/19

Reminders:

  1. Your Asia Review assignment was due yesterday
  2. Your Asia Assessment is due FRIDAY

  5. I sent emails to everyone yesterday, whether you had finished the assignment or not.
  6. Email me with any questions or concerns or comments or thoughts 🙂

Dearborn Schools Update

Dearborn Public Schools is offering free pickup lunch and breakfast for students while school is closed for the mandatory shut down over the next three weeks.

Additionally:

We realize the abrupt closure of all the District schools for weeks is causing concern about many issues.  As we have answers, we will post them here. Keep in mind, this type of closure is unprecedented in modern times, so the District needs time to figure out dozens of different issues.  Also, information may change as the situation and our planning continues to evolve. Check back here for updates. New information will be added to the top.

Happy Tuesday!

Reminders:

  1. Google Classroom: Asia Review assignment is due tomorrow
  2. Google Classroom: Asia Assessment is due Friday
  3. Check grades on Student/Parent Connect. Low grades are most likely because of the South Africa CER. Students can still make corrections / turn it in late on Google Classroom. If you make corrections or turn it in, be sure to press TURN IN or SUBMIT. Otherwise, I will not be alerted.
  4. Because we will not be able to have a one-on-one conference about your grades, I will be posting an assignment on Google Classroom for anyone with a D or an E that will help you make up the CER. Look for it this afternoon.

Email me with any questions or concerns or comments or thoughts 🙂

CNN10: Coronavirus’ impact on the gig economy, the importance of “flattening the curve,” and a wildlife center’s work to rehabilitate animals are today’s topics.

In class, whenever we watch CNN10, we have a discussion of what we learned afterward using the following sentence starters. You may want to watch CNN10 with someone at home and talk about it!

Assignments for Week 3/16

Assignments for this week can be found on Google Classroom. Be sure to complete them in the correct order:

  1. Asia Review: Look at the slideshow to refresh your brain. Then complete the practice assignment. You may view your accuracy and edit your responses. Do this FIRST. Due: Wednesday
  2. Asia Assessment: Answer the five exit ticket questions again. You will NOT be able to view accuracy or edit your responses. Due: Friday

Do not feel the need to complete both assignments at once 🙂 Check the due dates.

I am going to post two assignments a week. If you complete assignments early and would like access to future assignments early, email me and I will consider it based on your performance.

I do not want anyone to become overwhelmed or overloaded with work. Do not take on more than you can handle. But if you have a lot of time this week and would like more time for future assignments (an investigation)–please let me know.

If you have any questions or concerns about these assignments, please contact me by email!! I will attempt to answer questions quickly.

Closure Information

Please reach out to your friends and let them know about the survey sent on Friday. Talking with other teachers, it seems that many students have not yet completed this survey.

Also, please share the information in the following links with your families and friends. There is some very important information about resources, expectations, and support.

A Message from Principal Jebril about closure expectations and support.

A Message from the Counseling Department about resources for students in need.

NOTE: you WILL be allowed into the building on Monday 3/16, and Tuesday 3/17, from 9-12 to pick up your things and clean out your lockers if you did not come in on Friday.

******* you may not be able to enter the building at this point–we are getting mixed messages. You may want to call the building before leaving your homes in the morning. I will update when we find out for sure!

You may want to take the time to subscribe to both of these blogs 🙂

Resources

If you’re looking for anything to do while you’re at home, take a look at these free resources!

Virtual Museum Tours: this news article provides links to a dozen museums around the world that offer free virtual tours through Google Maps.

CNN10: CNN10 is a 10 minute news segment posted on school days and created for students. We often watch this in class–but it’s free for you at home, too!

National Geographic Kids: the website for National Geographic Kids provides many interactive resources about science and social studies.

I’ll update this with more resources as I find them. It is amazing to see the education community pulling together in this difficult time to provide resources for all of you at home!

Stay well!
