Have a nice summer!

Summer is finally here!

Students: Thank you so much for making this year fun! Despite the challenges we’ve faced as a society this year, you have all made my job easier with your hard work, positive attitudes, and curiosity towards the world! I hope that you have a relaxing summer and a fantastic 7th grade year 🙂

Parents/Guardians: I cannot thank you enough for the support you have provided to your children during this year! No one could possibly have been prepared for the situation we currently find ourselves in. Without all the work you have done to help your children continue their educations, I don’t know what would have happened! I hope that you are all able enjoy your summers as well–and that things begin to get better for everyone in the coming months.

Final Week!

Good Morning!!

It’s the last week of the 2019-2020 school year! We made it!

As we are winding down and getting ready for summer, please take a minute to look at these reminders:

  1. All work turned in by June 8 has been graded and entered into Student/Parent Connect. If you see something missing, please get it done and turned in by June 10!
  2. If you complete late work or corrections, you MUST email me so I know to grade it! Otherwise, I won’t know you’ve done the work!
  3. Remember, if you are failing a class for Card Marking 4, you may be placed in Summer School.
  4. I am going to be working on finalizing grades on Thursday.
  5. Please take the time to complete the two End of the Year Reflections on Google Classroom. They are marked as due on Thursday.

Summer’s Almost Here

Good Morning!

I will be getting all work from this week scored and returned to you within the next 24 hours. You should see grades for these assignments in Student/Parent Connect by Monday. If you would like to make corrections to your work, please email me or leave a comment so I know to recheck your work 🙂

If you are working on missing/late work, please get it to me by Monday, June 8. You MUST email me to tell me which assignments you have completed, or else I will not know to score them. You can ALSO leave a comment on each assignment you complete on Google Classroom–I will get an email alert for those.

If you need MORE TIME than Monday, June 8 to complete your missing work, you need to email me to come up with an individual plan. I’m here for you and I want to help.

Next week, you will see a couple “End of the Year” Activities posted for Social Studies. These are meant to be easy reflection activities to help you wrap up the year.

You guys have done such a great job with your online learning and I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to work with such a remarkable group of sixth graders this year!

About Late Work

To anyone who is working on catching up and turning late work in:

If you complete any assignment after its due date, you MUST email me directly or leave a comment on the assignment on Google Classroom telling me that it is now complete. I check current assignments multiple times during the week, but I ONLY check late work that students have emailed me about.

If you ONLY complete the Google Form and do NOT notify me, I will not know to go back and check for your work and you will continue to see that it is marked “missing.” Doing this is like doing your homework but leaving it in your backpack instead of turning it in.

Apologies!

I’m sorry for the confusion caused by my most recent Wednesday Update email! (sent 5/13)

It seems I did not do enough double and triple checking before clicking send and accidentally sent it to everyone instead of just students with no work submitted yet this week. I’ll make sure to quadruple check my Friday email to make sure it is correct before sending!

If you see scores for assignments on Google Classroom for this week (North America 1, 2, 3), you should NOT have received today’s email! You are doing great if you had one or two assignments already completed.

Thank you so much to everyone for your support and understanding! It really is great to hear from so many parents and to see how many of you are out there supporting your child’s learning at this time! (And to see some of you students out there advocating for yourselves!)

Again, I’m sorry for the confusion 🙂

Social Studies 5/7

Good Afternoon, Everyone!

I have been using Google Classroom more than iBlog to communicate recently. It is my understanding that there were too many messages being sent out from different platforms and it was overwhelming to get so many emails, so I cut back the amount I was posting!

However, I do want to remind everyone of my office hours–just in case!

I will be at my computer to answer email, Google Classroom, and help desk questions immediately during my office hours. If you would like to have a text message or phone conversation during these times, just send me an email and I will contact you back in your preferred way.

Tuesdays: 10-11am | Thursdays: 1:30-2:30pm

As always, if you have any questions or need help with anything, let me know!

I hope everyone is able to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather we are having!

Social Studies 4/20

Good Morning and Happy Monday!

There is a lot of new information this week so I apologize in advance for the length of this post!

You can find the Weekly Classwork Calendars on the Smith blog here–there is also a summary of new student expectations per the district’s plan.

For 6th Grade Social Studies this week, you will see three new assignments on Google Classroom:

  1. Australia: Movement (I recommend you complete this on 4/20)
  2. Australia: Region (I recommend you complete this on 4/22)
  3. Australia: Assessment (I recommend you complete this on 4/24)

The movement and region assignments follow the same format as last week’s work: read the slideshow or watch the video presentation, complete the questions on the Google Form, check/revise your work with the “view accuracy” and “edit your response” tools.

The Australia Assessment is on a Google Form. There is a video in which I explain directions. You will NOT be able to edit your responses once you have pressed submit.

Scoring for online assignments will be as follows:

Social Studies Scoring

If you have questions or concerns, you can send me an email or use the help desk Google Form at the top of the Classwork tab on Google Classroom.

Social Studies / Science Google Meets: Wednesday and Friday

  1. 2nd Hour (A and B) 9:30
  2. 3rd Hour (A and B) 10:15
  3. 4th Hour (A and B) 1:00

Social Studies Office Hours: I will be at my computer during these times to respond to questions immediately. If you would like a phone call, please send me an email requesting it 🙂

  1. Tuesday: 10:00-11:00
  2. Thursday: 1:30-2:30

During the rest of the week, I will do my best to respond to emails, comments, and help desk tickets as quickly as possible.

Have a safe week, friends!

Social Studies 4/14

Good Afternoon!

A few reminders for assignments this week:

  1. Australia Location (Monday)
  2. Australia Place (Wednesday)
  3. Australia HEI (Friday)

And an update on the Nepal CERs: I have given feedback and scores on all CERs that were turned in and returned the assignment to you. You can check your work by opening the assignment again.

  • If you would like to make corrections and resubmit, please do.
  • I will not know you’ve made corrections unless you resubmit.
  • Please do NOT resubmit unless you have made corrections.

Have a great afternoon 🙂

Social Studies 4/13

Welcome Back!

I hope that everyone is well and that you had the chance to relax and maybe even enjoy some of our nice weather over break.

We are starting a new unit on Australia. This unit will be like what we have done in class about Asia and Africa. There will be a Slideshow/Reading and Practice Assignment for each of the five themes of geography and then a brief assessment. I will be posting three assignments a week–each due Friday. Please check the 6th Grade Calendar for a recommended schedule.

On Google Classroom you will see:

  1. Asia: Location (Recommended: 4/13)
  2. Asia: Place (Recommended: 4/15)
  3. Asia: Human/Environment Interaction (Recommended: 4/17)

For each of these assignments, you should:

  1. Read or watch the slideshow (there is a video recording of a Google Meet where I have gone through each slideshow and assignment).
  2. Complete the Practice Assignment Google Form
  3. View your accuracy and make corrections

There will also be a “Week 4/13 Help Desk” form posted. This is to use if you’ve gotten stuck and don’t know how or what to email me. If you’d rather just email me your question, that’s fine too! No need to worry about the help desk if you don’t need help.

Social Studies 4/3

Happy Friday, Everyone!

  1. Investigation 4: CER is due today
—-Your Investigation 4: Sources assignment should be done FIRST
—-You are answering the question: Why does hazardous child labor continue to exist in Nepal?
———Identify one or two reasons from the sources
———Use evidence from the sources to back up your response
  2. If you need help, send me an email 🙂
—-Don’t forget to listen to voca/vocaroo links
  3. Next week is Spring Break, so I will not be posting new assignments.
—-I hope you have time to enjoy yourself over break
—-If you need time to continue or revise work, feel free to use it 🙂

This is a difficult and uncertain time for everyone. I’m so impressed by those of you who have put in the effort to keep up your skills over the last three weeks.
