Late work policy

STEM Late Work Policy 2018-19

Our goal at STEM is to provide meaningful opportunities for learning to occur that meet the needs of each and every student. As educators, we are aware that each student works at their own pace and has different needs outside of school as a result of family situations and extracurricular activities.

At STEM we are always trying to raise the bar and prepare our students for high school as well as real life.  With that in mind we created a homework policy that well help our students better be prepared for their future careers.

The STEM late work policy for the year is as follows:

Classwork and/or homework is expected to be turned in by the due date on a consistent basis.

If this is not possible, late work will be accepted, but only up until the Monday following the assignment deadline. That means that if an assignment is due during the week, students have all week through the weekend to complete their missing work, if necessary.

Teachers will not accept late assignments for points after Mondays at 2:15pm.

I have been an artist for over 25 years, my main focus has been in illustration and comic art style. I have been teaching for 5 years, I have my degrees from Wayne State University both in BFA( Bachelor of Fine and Preforming Arts, and a MAT( Masters of Art and Teaching) . I believe that art can close the gap in communication where words can't be spoken art takes over. The success and exploration art allows students to achieve breeds confidence and joy that will carry over to other aspects in life.

  1. Dear STEM Staff/Teachers:
Raising the bar is good, please help students with processes that help them succeed in clearing the bar.
    1. Please allow students a little time at end of each class to enter assignments in planners. Our daughter and son state no time given at end of classes.
    2. Please enter all assignments in Google classroom so students and teachers can see a comprehensive work load. Teachers could subscribe to each others google classroom to see composite work loads.
    3. Teachers, please collaborate so that students have a realistic work load at home. Our daughter is currently overloaded. Our son was also overloaded at times when at STEM.
    4. IXLs. While these can be an effective learning tool, good instruction in the classroom, review resources prior to IXL work, and a time limit per IXL would help. A 90% requirement is sometimes unrealistic. Our son deemed IXLs “maddening”; our daughter thinks they add no value. When assigning IXLs, state title of IXL so students and parents know topic. A title/topic can allow parents to begin to help students at home. How can parents track time spent/% progress on IXLs? Let’s make IXLs an effective tool, not just busy work that frustrates students and sets them up for failure. Students sometimes forget to login when working IXLs, is there a setting to require login?
    Respectfully,
    The Boyces
