The google voice number is the number you can use to call me, and the number that will show up when I call you. You’ll just see the number, not my name. This week is spring break. Stay safe, healthy, and vigilant.

Field Trip Friday!

I hope you enjoyed last Friday’s field trip to the Houston Zoo. Today, we’re going to visit the Georgia Aquarium! At the aquarium, you’ll be able to watch jellyfish, Puffin penguins, Beluga whales, piranhas, sea lions, and so much more. https://www.georgiaaquarium.org/webcam/ocean-voyager/

Why? Draw a picture of your favorite animal and tell why. Send me your picture or I’d love to see a video of you!

Dearborn Schools Playgrounds Closed

It is starting to truly feel like spring. Next week is spring break and I imagine the kids are getting antsy and want to go out to the school playground to play. However, ALL Dearborn Schools playgrounds are closed. I just wanted to remind you of the Superintendent’s press release:

Good Morning,

The weekend is here and although the weather forecast is calling for rain, we all like to get outside and get some fresh air. This is especially true during this time of year when the temperatures are on the rise and we all have been spending a lot of time inside.

Many are thinking that it might be alright to get outside and have children play with one or two friends. Unfortunately, this is not something we should be doing at this time. The battle to stop the spread of the COVID 19 virus is on-going and gathering in small groups, even outside at the local park is not something we should be doing.

During the State of Michigan mandated shut down, all Dearborn Public School facilities, including playgrounds, and athletic fields, will be closed to the public. Please do not attempt to go onto the fields or access the playgrounds.  If you are found on the property you will be asked to leave.

The Governor has ordered that we all shelter in place.  This is not a recommendation or suggestion. This action is being taken to help in the effort to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus and to mitigate the number of people becoming sick. Hospitals in southeastern Michigan are being overwhelmed and are reaching the point where they are unable to meet the needs of those arriving for care. We must all do our part to help slow the spread of this virus and remain at home!

The Governor did say that it is ok to go for a walk, run, or bike ride. However, we can not gather in groups at local parks or playgrounds.

We look forward to the day, hopefully in the not too distant future, when our facilities will once again be open to the public and we can all return to our regular routines. The District appreciates all of the support that the Dearborn community has shown and the tremendous amount of community spirit that has been demonstrated during this very difficult time.  Together we will get through this, one community, #DearbornStrong!

See theĀ Arabic version of the playground closure announcement.

Please continue to stay safe, healthy, and vigilant.

Float or Sink

Today, we’re going to experiment with items around the house that may sink or float in water! First, gather some items from around the house. Now, I want you to predict if they’ll float or sink. Put the items you think will sink into one pile, and the items that will float into another. Now fill up a tub with water or ask mom if you can use the sink, and test your hypothesis.

Here’s my prediction of which items will float and which will sink:

The actual experiment

The results

I was surprised at the results of the experiment. I wonder why some items were able to float while others sank??? Share the results of your experiment.

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

Watch Mrs. Maktari read one of our favorite fairy tales, The Three Billy Goats Gruff. At the end of the read aloud, I used the bookmark that we made at our literacy meeting to retell the story. If you don’t have the bookmark, make a new one, or just remember the story elements. The story elements are: the characters, setting, and what happened at the beginning, middle, and end of the story.

You could also act out the story with your family! I’d love to hear you read a story to me as well. Maybe, we can make a read aloud schedule so that you can read to your classmates!

What’s Your Name?

Time to have some fun with your name! Write your first and last name. Remember to use an uppercase/capital letter just for the first letter in your first name, and the first letter of your last name, Ashar Maktari.

Do each activity for every letter of your name! Have your brothers and sisters join in the fun!!

Field Trip Friday!!

Good morning boys and girls! Today, we will be taking a field trip to the Houston Zoo: https://www.houstonzoo.org/explore/webcams/

While visiting the zoo, check out the Chimpanzees, Elephants, Giraffes, Gorillas, Leaf Cutter Ants, and Rhinoceroses. You can move the webcam button, and when it’s your turn, you’ll see a drop down list of positions to choose from in the upper right. Take a picture of your favorite animal, then write or draw which one is your favorite and why.

There are more great videos about animals and nature on the National Geographic Kids website: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXVCgDuD_QCkI7gTKU7-tpg
