Thursday 3/19

Hello! Hope everyone is safe and healthy!

GOAL FOR TODAY: FINISH THE 6 I-READY LESSONS. Then, get caught up on the Khan Academy and IXL Lessons. As always, if you need help, get stuck, or have questions, please send me an email! 🙂

For students without a computer, PLEASE READ:

Lowrey School will be distributing Chromebooks to families in order to support their child’s Remote Learning. Each Chromebook was checked and cleaned by admin and personnel to ensure that they are safe to be used. Please note that Chromebooks need a working internet connection.   If your family does not have a working computer and is in need of a Chromebook, then please come to Lowrey’s main doors, tomorrow Thursday March 19th between times of 11:30am to 3pm. One chromebook per household!
All parents will need to sign a consent form to insure Chromebooks will be returned in the same condition they were given. All parents and students are responsible for the Chromebooks. They must be returned once students return to school.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

How does i-Ready Work? What assignments am I supposed to complete?

When you took the iReady Diagnostic Test, i-Ready gave you a score and created a path for you. The path is made up of lessons and quizzes. After each lesson, there is a quiz. You must pass the quiz in order to move on to the next lesson. The next lesson will be a new topic with a new quiz. For this week, I assigned 6 of these. So you would do this 6 times.

Is i-Ready the same for each student?

No. The diagnostic test determines at what level the students can answer questions on their own. Therefore, for every lesson in the path, the students should NOT need any help from parents, siblings, or anyone else. The path is tailored to meet the needs of that specific student. Some students might have a path that starts off with Number and Operations and other students might have a path that starts off with Geometry. Every student has strengths in different areas, and the path is made for that.

Which Khan Academy Assignments do I do this week?

Click on PAST assignments. Remember there is a little arrow at the bottom that goes to the next page. Work on completing all past assignments, then focus on the squares under each unit in your Mission that you have NOT started, completed or mastered yet. The more assignments your master the higher your mission percentage increases. The recommendation is at least 1 assignment daily. (Each assignment has only 4-7 questions!)

Do I do ALL of the starred IXL? Or just the ones in the list that was posted?

This week you are working on completing the past due DD’s which were assigned almost 3 weeks ago. Then, begin the FF’s. Many students have already completed all of the IXL’s assigned so far (Great job!). However, if you have not, work on catching up. I starred all of the lessons that 6th graders should have completed by the end of the year in the IXL mission for those students that would like to get ahead in their work.

What percent do we need to get to for Khan? What about IXL?

The usual 100% per Khan Academy assignment. We are also aiming for 100% of the mission by the end of April. For IXL, the usual 80-90% is fine, but don’t spend hours on one single assignment (about 15-20 minutes). If you are stuck on an assignment, send me and email and I will send you an explanation like one I would give if I were sitting right next to you. (Virtual teaching, cool!)

Wednesday 3/18

Good Morning Students,

Remember to check your school email and my iBlog daily! Please reach out to your classmates and be sure that they are checking the iBlog.

I am noticing that many students have not accessed the i-Ready Portal. Please go to Clever, sign in, and complete at least two lessons today. I spoke with all of the students and parents over email and many over the phone in the last two days regarding accessing and completing assigned work on-line. However, many of those students still have not been on-line. It is imperative that students are working from home to demonstrate that learning and enrichment is still happening, even though we are not physically in school.

I’d like your main focus today to be the i-Ready lessons and quizzes. 6 of them are due Friday and are going in the Gradebook as Quiz Points. Khan Mission should be worked on and is due April 12, 2020, so pace yourself according to your percentage completed thus far, and some IXL assignments are also due at the end of the week by Sunday.

Please reach out through email with your questions or concerns. Stay safe and healthy!

Food Pick-Up Reminder: As a reminder the food pick-up is from 10:00-12:00 at Dearborn H.S., Edsel Ford H.S., Fordson H.S., McCollough/Unis, Woodworth, Salina Intermediate, and starting Monday 3-23 O.L. Smith.

Tuesday 3/17

Please spend some time today working on your i-Ready though Clever lessons in your path. If you are struggling with something, please send me a message and I will help you! The system will flag that you are struggling if you are continuously submitting incorrect responses. Also please reach out if you are having a hard time with any Khan or IXL. I really want you to understand the material so that we can move forward with some new topics next week.

Thank you for your dedication to your education!!

Chromebooks for Families In Need: If your family does not have access to a computer, please send an email to your first hour teacher. The District is working on a solution for these families. More information on this to come.

Dearborn Schools offering free breakfast and lunch pickup for students at six sites

Dearborn Public Schools is offering free pickup lunch and breakfast for students while school is closed for the mandatory shut down over the next three weeks.

Families will be able to stop in and pick up a bag with both breakfast and lunch for each child in the family.  Pickups will run daily from 10 a.m. to noon starting tomorrow, March 17 at Fordson, Edsel Ford and Dearborn high schools, McCollough-Unis, Salina Intermediate, and Woodworth Middle School.

Signage at each site will direct parents and students where to enter the building. Food will be near entrances to minimize the amount of time community members spend in the facilities.

Please note, meals are available to anyone age 18 and younger.  Students do not need to be present, and the Dearborn School student does not need to attend at that building.  A designated person can collect meals for multiple children.  Meals for Saturday and Sunday can be picked up on Friday.

The program will allow the District’s 20,700 students to continue to have access to healthy food.  Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last week ordered all Michigan schools closed from March 16 through April 3 to slow the spread of novel coronavirus and cases of COVID-19.  Dearborn Schools is scheduled for spring break April 6 to 10, so school will not resume in the District until April 13.

The grab-and-go meals will be served at least through April 3.

Superintendent Glenn Maleyko praised the District’s food service team for quickly implementing this drastic change in service to meet the needs of families.

“We appreciate the patience of our families and community as we all try to adjust to this sudden change from closing schools,” Dr. Maleyko said.  “More than three quarters of our students qualify for free or reduced priced school meals.  We realize this food is important to our families, many of whom may be facing additional financial hardships from the sudden economic changes related to COVID-19.”

Check the Dearborn Public Schools website at www.dearbornschools.org for any updates or changes to the meal program or for other issues regarding the school closure.
