  • SLOT-Referencing Article of the Week #6, read and annotate for Speaker, Occasion, Audience, and Purpose.
    • Highlight textual evidence.
    • Label and explain all annotations.
      • Practice Embedding Quotes-Keep this under the Notes tab of your binder. Title the paper “Embedding Quotes.”
      • 1.Introduce the quote (evidence).

        2.Copy the quote (evidence) making sure to include quotation marks and the parenthetical citation at the end of the quote.

        3.Explain how the quote (evidence) helps to prove the claim (reasoning).

      • Directions: Practice embedding quotes using the following information from the article. Do this on a sheet of loose-leaf and keep with your article. 

        Claim- Students spend too many hours taking state standardized tests.

        Textual Evidence- “A study of 66 big-city school districts finds students spend an average of 20 to 25 hours taking standardized tests each academic year” (Study finds kids must take 112 tests by 12th grade; Obama looks for limits 1).
