Reading Writing Challenge 2.2

Oct. 19th

This week is the start of the 2nd marking. Students are expected to continue reading for 20 minutes a night for 4 nights out of the week and write for 20 minutes once a week at home. That is their challenge. They can use your support with reaching this challenge by providing a time and quiet place to read and write. I am asking that this week parents sign that their child has read as a way for you to have a discussion on what they are reading. Another change is that students will need to summarize up their week of reading and reflect their thoughts on what they read this week.

In class we are working on reading strategies and personal narrative writing. At this point we are working on typing the personal narratives into google docs and are expecting to have it done by Friday.  Towards the end of the week your child may need to finish it from home. If so I will post directions on how to do so.

Remember Parent/Teacher/ Student Conferences are next Monday from 4-6 pm and Wednesday from 3:30-6:30 pm. Ist marking report cards will be available to pick up then. Watch for a note home on the details soon.

Week of Oct. 12th

This week is the last week of the first card marking. The report card will come home with your child next week.

In reading, we will be looking at how to write a constructed response to questions using the A.C.E. method ( Answer, Cite, Explain). We will also look at mentor personal narrative texts to model our personal narrative writing after.

Homework Challenges: Students are expected to read for 20 minutes 4 days a week and make 4 entries based on their reading. They are also expected to write at least 1 day a week for 20 minutes. All of this is to be done in their homework notebook. Having your child read and write is the best way for them to improve their reading and writing which is the goal. It is their practice and is vital that they complete it each week for them to grow. It is grade as formative assessment each week and does need to be completed on time ( due every Monday). It isn’t something they can makeup as they have already missed the practice and are on to new practice. Therefore it isn’t optional.

Here are this week’s homework challenges.

In writing we will be working on the elements of a personal narrative.

Language Arts Progress reports for all students were sent home yesterday. Please take a look at how your child is doing They should be returned, signed, by Wednesday and are worth 1 bonus point (extra credit).  Please note that if Bonus Challenge or Extra Credit Summer Reading are showing as missing that is because they didn’t do the assignments ( and they can’t now). It doesn’t hurt their grade since it is factored in as worth 0 points. Students who did then earn bonus points that can only help their grade. You should have also received your passwords and user id’s for Mi-Star this week as well.

Finally this week’s homework is the reading and writing challenge (see below 2 pages) and is due Monday.  Students are required to read for 20 minutes a night (4 nights) for this class as well as write 20-40 minutes ( 1-2 nights). This work should be in their homework notebook (spiral).  Please make sure your child has it in their spiral notebook and are working on it every night.

Short Week of Sept. 21st

This week students took their NWEA reading and language tests to determine where they are. Students received a lexile score for reading. This score can help them determine which books are good fit books ( they can understand them because they are on their reading level. Most of our books here show what lexile they are but for books from outside of school students can go to www.lexile.com and type in the title to finds the score. Students can also use the site to help them find books that interest them in their lexile score.

Today, after your child has me for class,  Mi-star will show your child’s current grade in class including this week’s homework challenge. Be sure to take a look.

Finally over the break students may do a bonus challenge for homework. They can chose to either read and write a summary of what they read ( include title of book, author, and time read) or write about something of their choice ( include a word count and time spent). Doing so will result in extra credit!

Enjoy the break!!
