Week of Feb. 22

This week students will be writing their introduction and conclusion to their essay. From their they will move into revising and editing. On Wednesday night they will be asking you to give their essay a quick once over before they turn in their final copy on Thursday.  The essay is on their goggle docs through the district and can be accessed anywhere. They will need to bring a printed copy to class with them on Thursday as well as the signed parent checklist sheet. This will give you a great opportunity to see where they are in their writing.

Week of Feb. 16th

It seems that we have had quite a bug going around the classroom last week. It even caught up with me, but thankfully I am starting to feel better. Hopefully with the break we can keep it from spreading. With that said MIStar grades have been updated as much as I could today. I still have the Figurative Language Test and Projects to get through so watch for those later in the week.

Tomorrow students will begin writing their Character Analysis Essay. The writing challenge they did last week that was due today will be the basis for the essay ( there are several students who didn’t have it today- see MiStar- and need to have it tomorrow to keep up).  Each day students will be using google docs to  type the paragraphs of their essay. They are expected to be able to complete at least one paragraph a day in class.  Students that don’t finish will need to work on it outside of class for homework. We will also be working on Vocabulary Lesson 4.

Important Dates:

Monday, Feb. 22nd Reading Writing Challenge Due

Thursday, Feb. 25’th  Character Analysis Essay Due

Friday, Feb. 26th Vocabulary Lesson 4 Test

Week of Feb. 8th

This week we are wrapping up figurative language. We will be reading a short story, Scout’s Honor, to see how an author develops characterization. This week’s homework for the reading and writing challenge is a little different.  Everyone will be a good-fit fiction book and be working on characterization. The students have a graphic organizer to complete to find evidence in their good-fit book of character traits. From this they will be constructing an essay next week. It is highly important that they complete it and have it in class next Tuesday.

I have also noticed that many students Reading and Writing Notebook’s are filled and many are running low on supplies ( pencils, pens , paper, glue, etc). If you could please check with your child and get them replenished that would be great!

Congratulations 6th graders on placing 2nd in the  Bryant Spirit Day Competition!

Watch for photos soon ( trying to upload them).

We are now starting the 4th marking and are halfway through the school year. This week students will be looking at where they are and where they want to be when the school year ends. In their planners (page 6 Blue section) students have written their NWEA scores ( used to find their grade level) and Lexile scores ( used to find books that they can read.)  Students can practice for the NWEA by going to the district website and click on the link for NWEA RIT practice. They can also go to www.lexile.com to look for books in their lexile range or to determine the lexile score of a book they are reading.

In class we will also be finishing up Vocabulary Lesson 3 and beginning the review of the first 3 Lessons. Students will be reviewing figurative language and working on their figurative language posters.

There is an opportunity for extra credit this weekend. Students can attend the Big Read on Saturday and pick up a copy of “Do You Know Poe?” to bring to class. This event is a community event and offers something for everyone! The details are below.
