Week of Nov. 21st

This week we will review for the Unit 2 test on elements of plot and story devices.

On Tuesday students will apply their knowledge of these elements to a grade level text on the Unit 2 Test.

The week we return from break is the last week of the marking period. Students are expected to have completed at least one book and write an exit ticket by Wednesday, Nov. 30th.  Scores for those that have a completed exit ticket will be recorded on Mi-Star Tuesday, Nov. 22nd. If you r child doesn’t have a score it is highly recommend that they read over the break.

Over the break there is an opportunity for extra credit. Student may create an entry for the PTSA Reflection contest on the theme ” What is your story?”. Entries with permission slip are due Monday, Nov. 28th. See details below.

Week of Nov. 14th

This week we will be continuing our unit of narratives. Students will be looking at how foreshadowing is used by authors to create suspense. Students will be doing a reader’s theater based on the radio play ” The Hitchhiker: p. 92-101. Students are expected to practice speaking their assigned part at home before performing with the class on Friday. It is extremely important they work on their voice giving the appropriate expression.

 

There is a test retake for the Monkey’s Paw on Thursday before school.

Next Tuesday will be our Unit Test on Narratives.

Reminder and Extra Credit

Reminder in google classroom you should a complete story drafted and revised for your sequel to the Monkey’s Paw by Friday. The final copy is due Monday and is a summative grade.

Extra Credit Opportunity: Moby Max- Reading Literature: Mood and Tone has been assigned for extra credit. It is to be completed by Monday. Points earned are the points you will receive for extra credit.

Week of Nov. 7th

This week students will be switching from reading narrative to writing a narrative.

Students will be writing the prequel to the Monkey’s Paw.

The assignment is posted on our google classroom. The draft is to be completed by

class on Wednesday.

In class we will be looking at the draft and make revisions to the plot,

mood/tone, and dialogue.Students will be doing most of the writing at home.

The final copy is due Monday, Nov. 14th. It is a summative grade.

Progress reports are being sent home on Friday and are expected to by signed by a parent and returned on Monday, Nov. 14th.

Wayne County Regional Enhancement Education Millage Proposal

 

School districts in Wayne County have placed a proposal on the November 8th ballot to provide added funding for our schools. It is the “Regional Enhancement Millage Proposal.”

If approved by the entire county, the 2 mil proposal will generate approximately $6.2 million from Dearborn but the District will receive $7.8 million in additional funding for our schools.  Money would go to local schools starting this year and the millage expires after six years. Continue reading →

Week of Oct. 31st

This week we will be reading the Monkey’s Paw and examining how author’s develop mood as well as applying what we have previously learned.

Due Date:

Wednesday Nov. 2nd Vocabulary Storyboard ” Tell Tale Heart”

Students may choose any three vocabulary words from the story, and create a storyboard for each, with the word, the definition, and a visual aid that clearly shows the meaning of the word.

To turn in, simply save your storyboard to the Tell Tale Heart Vocabulary assignment.

This week we will be analyzing how plot drives a story by reading the Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Alan Poe. We will look at how author’s develop suspense and build their characters.

Week of Oct. 17th

The 2nd marking has started. This week we will be setting reading, writing and academic goals.  We will be begin a unit on narrative fiction.  Students will need to update their Bookie- Selfie( picture of them with the book they are currently reading) by Friday. They will also be creating a bookmark of their favorite book that they have read since last school year. The bookmark is due Wednesday, Oct. 26th.

Reminder report cards will be given out at conferences next week. After picking them up please come down to Rm 53 with your child for a  student-led  conference.
