This week we will be continuing to work on  the skills of analyzing and evaulating by creating theories and claims with evidence and reasoning (CER).

 

Monday: “The Hitchhiker”- Compare and contrast media (radio play / television                                                    episode). Which is more effective? why?

Tuesday: CER- Choose a prompt, create a theory.Claim,  Evidence and Reasoning

Extra Credit Opportunity: Contest The Big Read ( see last week for directions)

 

Week of Oct. 2nd

 

This week we will actual work on “The Elevator, since last week we sidetracked to introduce Dearborn’s Big Read The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri. This is an event for the community through the Dearborn Public Library and sponsored by various local business. Currently they are looking for entries for an anthology they will be publishing.They are looking for the story of your name or family tree, or your immigration story, or a family recipe. I am encourage you to submit entries to them. If you do submit an entry please copy me when emailing it to them to receive Extra Credit.  See the flyers with links attached below.

Monday: Read  The Elevator,  bookmark due and the research homework on your name

Week of Sept. 27

This week we will begin our Unit on “What makes a story effective?”

During this unit you will be analyzing text to determine if they are effective.

You will be creating a claim and backing it up with evidence and reasoning (CER).

You will also analyze how the  word choice of the author (tone) creates the mood.

Monday:  We will create a list of elements needed to make a story effective.

Tuesday: You will create Frayer models of vocabulary words for “The Elevator”

If you are absent here is the list of words, chose 1 row to do.

Wednesday: You will present those words to the class.

Thursday: You will read short story ” The Elevator” on page 31 of our literature book.

Friday: You will write a CER response to the question, ” Is “The Elevator” an effective story?

 

Homework: READ and bring your book to class each day to read as well.

Remember you must complete a book by  October 27th.

Week of Sept. 18

This week we be taking the NWEA reading and language to see where we are currently at. The results will help you in setting goals for this year as well as chose books.

Homework:

Book Selfie Due Wednesday, Sept. 20- photo of you and the book you have chosen to read. Print out 4 by 6 size, black and white or color.If you can’t print outside of class remember  printers are available in library and 1 in my room before and after school Tuesday. Week of Sept. 11th

This week students will be presenting their book talks and turning in their work from summer learning ( reading and Moby-Max). Grades for these summative assignments will be posted by Friday. On Thursday and Friday students will be taking the District Common Reading and Writing Assessment to see where they are at.

The Final Weeks

Hard to believe that your final weeks are already here. While there is much excitement , it is important to remember that there is much to be done. Now is not the time to shut down but  one for you to continue doing your best.

Week of May 30th

This week we will find out how the author concludes The Outsiders.

If you are absent the plan is to read Chapter 9 on Tuesday( What part of the plot is this chapter?), Chapter 10 on Wednesday ( What mood has the author created? What words create that mood?, and Chapter 11-12( How effective is the ending) on Thursday. Friday will be a wrap up about stereotypes.
