Week of March 16

Your child will be bringing home a prove it letter that they wrote in class today about their at home reading for the last week. My hope is the letter will give you an opportunity to see what your child has been reading and their thinking about their reading.

The first paragraph is basic information about what and  how much they are reading. It also includes their goal/plan for this week’s reading. I explained to them that their at home reading is like training for a marathon. In order to be successful we need short term goals to make our long term goal  of growing as a reader as shown on the NWEA test. By setting a personal goal each week we can train effectively.

The second paragraph is a short (4-5 sentence if I must give a length) summary of what they read last week and identify where they are at in the book.

The third paragraph is based on what they think while they are reading. They can use any of the reading flags when writing this part and explain their thinking.

The last paragraph  is just a quick ending.

Realize that the wrote the letter in about 20- 30 minutes with guidance so it is a draft ( meaning it is natural writing that hasn’t been revised or edited).

I am asking that you please read the letter tonight and respond by  answering the following:

Do you think the proved that they read?

Do you have any comments for them?

Please sign and return tomorrow (Tuesday). If you are unable to read them tonight, please sign  send them back with the comment to resend home this weekend.  This way I can read and grade them.

Also please note that report cards and the current NWEA scores will be available to be picked up in the lobby during conferences Wednesday after school. After picking them up if you wish to see us, please come to Mrs. Carter’s RM 14 with your child.
