Monday, December 9th!

Happy Monday! Glad to be back with you all 🙂

12/9 Quick Write:

I will be collecting your Postcard today. Then we will briefly wrap up our Social Pyramids– I know many of you had to fill in some more information, and most of you still needed to color. You will turn in your Pyramid today!

After you turn in your Social Pyramid, we will talk about Ancient Egyptian religion. Specifically, I will introduce a couple of the Egyptian gods, and we will examine the process a soul would take throughout the Afterlife.

The video below describe the journey a person’s soul would take, and depicts many gods along the way.

Together we will discuss why you think the Afterlife journey was so complicated, and we will brainstorm any similar beliefs we know about from other cultures or religions.

Have a great Monday… keep on keepin’ on!

3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Hours:

As a reminder, your Ancient Egyptian Postcard is due on Monday. It should be written on a large index card which you took at the end of class.

On the lined side, you will write from the perspective of one social class, and you will be writing to a different class. Instructions are below. Use your notes from Thursday to help you!

On the blank side of your index card, you will draw and color a picture that is related to Egypt– be creative!

Below you will find the textbook pages of all of the social classes, in case you need to add information that was left off of your notes.

This postcard is due on MONDAY.

Thursday, Dec 5th:

We are cruising through the week!

12/5 Quick Write:

We will start off class with a video that is full of interesting, and gross, facts about daily life in Ancient Egypt.

Then we will finish up our notes from the textbook. Remember, you need to take notes on TWO sections– on the section that you picked, and on your partner’s section as well. Focus on key ideas on what daily life was like for the people in each class.

Once we have wrapped up our notes, you will show me what you have learned about social class by writing one postcard. The postcard will be written as if you were living in a certain social class in Ancient Egypt. In other words, you will describe your daily life from the perspective of one social class in Ancient Egypt. Include the following information:

We will have some more time tomorrow to work on your postcard– take your time and show me what you’ve learned!

Hope the day is quick, smooth and full of knowledge!

Wednesday, December 4th–

We’re getting back into our routine now… yay!

12/4 Quick Write:

Today we are continuing our studies of Ancient Egyptian Social Classes. We will review the six levels of class by watching a quick video. Pay attention to the social classes that the video adds in, and leaves out.

Then we will take a few notes as a class on how daily life looked for different classes of Egyptians (see slides below). Add these to the notes you took yesterday on social classes.

With the rest of class, you will work with a partner to take notes on one section from the textbook– you can pick your section, but you and your partner need to read different sections.

You will take notes on your section (see chart below), and then you will share your section with your partner. By the end of class, you need to have taken notes, and be comfortable with, two social classes.

See the attached directions below.

Below are the textbook pages, page 90 to 103:

Have a great day!! Halfway through!

Tuesday, Dec. 3rd!

12/3 Quick Write:

Today we are turning our attention to a new chapter: Social Class! Social class is closely related to the Pharaohs… the pharaohs were on the top of Ancient Egypt’s social pyramid! We will briefly take notes on the six levels of social class, and then you will create your own social pyramid.

You will use your notes, the textbook and your prior knowledge to fill in this pyramid.
See the textbook pages, instructions and the pyramid handout attached below!

Have a lovely day– just keep going 🙂

Monday, DECEMBER 2nd

Whoa…. it’s December y’all! Welcome back! We are all hopefully relaxed and ready for the next chunk of school before another break! It may be a little rough getting back into the headspace of school, but I have faith in us 🙂

12/2 Quick Write:

If you were gone last Tuesday, you need to make up the TWO quick writes from last week and turn them in. You will also need to complete the Pharaoh’s Gallery Walk at the beginning of class so you are caught up on the notes. See the Pharaoh’s Graphic Organizer below that you will be filling out.

Today we will review the Pharaoh Gallery Walk by comparing the various powers the Egyptian Pharaoh’s had (which should be in your notes from Tuesday), with the powers of modern leaders today. To do this, we will create a Venn Diagram.

On your Venn Diagram you will list 3-5 powers that ONLY Pharaohs had, 3-5 powers that modern leaders have today, and 2-3 similar powers that Pharaohs and modern leaders both have.

At the bottom of your Venn Diagram, you must complete the two sentence stems:
** One power that modern day leaders and Egyptian Pharaohs have in common is…
** One power Egyptian Pharaohs had that modern day leaders don’t have is…

Here is the Venn Diagram handout:

Have a great day! I’m glad we’re all back.

Tuesday, November 26th– Target Tuesday & last day before break!

Hello, happy almost break! Today classes are a tad shorter because we will have our second week of Target Tuesday. You will go to the same teacher you went to last week! Remember, no advisory on Target Tuesdays… go straight to first hour.

11/26 Quick Write: You are turning in TWO Quick Writes today.

Today we will finish up our work with the Pharaoh posters. If you and your group would like to present your poster, you will have the opportunity at the beginning of class. Then y’all will participate in a gallery walk of everyone’s posters, taking notes on all four pharaohs. Your Gallery Walk handout is below.

When I see you next week, we will start to dig into Ancient Egyptian social classes and social structure, as well as some mummy stuff too!

I wish you all a relaxing and refreshing 5 days off. Please be very safe, and perhaps reflect on some of the parts of your life that make you smile. While the history of Thanksgiving can be controversial and melancholy, it’s also an opportunity to appreciate the positives things in our lives. I hope you each know that I am grateful to be with you almost everyday of the week, and to be your teacher. Even though you often exhaust me, I am thankful for you!

Cheers!

Monday, November 25th~

Short week!! No doubt we are all ready for a long break, but we still need to gracefully get through the next two days… let’s do it!

11/25 Quick Write

Today you are finishing your Pharaoh Posters. Some of you finished organizing and writing in your information in pencil and I checked you off. Some of you still need to write down the important accomplishments, dates etc, and before you use pens and make things permanent, I need to check off spelling and accuracy.

You have most of the period today to finish these posters– since I have given you so much time, I expect them to be very nice! If you want to bring colored pens or pencils to use, feel free.

Tomorrow if there are any groups who would like to present, you may do so. Otherwise, everyone’s posters will be put around the classroom and you will preform a gallery walk, taking notes on all four pharaohs.

Happy Monday, have a nice day!

We made it through a full week! We have a weekend, then a long break, to look forward to– just keep going!

11/22 Quick Write: You are turning these in today!! Make sure they are complete with your name on top.

We are continuing our Pharaoh posters today– they need to have accurate information, correct spelling and grammar, be colorful, and EVERYONE needs to participate. Remember, I have eyes, and I am watching who is on task, and who is not.

We will have time to add final touches and details on Monday.

Have a very fun, and very safe, weekend!
