Dear Parents: I hope all of you have enjoyed the lovely weather. We made it to June! Thank you for your continued support in the Remote Learning Process. Remember, the school district has given a guideline for students at the Second Grade Level to participate in approximately 20 minutes of learning per subject each day. Now that the end of the school year is upon us, the District has asked us to reduce the amount of assignments, in order for parents to catch up on any remote learning, and for teachers to be able to finish grading. Remember that this last card marking will have grades demonstrating level of participation. The highest grade for participation is M(Meeting), then P(Progressing), and LP (Limited Participation). All of you have done an outstanding job with the online learning, and I have no concerns about level of participation for anyone. I will continue to contact you through text, phone, or email, as I have before. You may also contact me by call, text, or email if you have any questions, or even to update me on any work your child has finished. I am available Monday-Friday from 8:30AM-3:30PM, and Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00AM-2:00PM. I will also be keeping a log of student participation that Mr. Short will review weekly. Thus far, all students have been actively participating in their assignments, and I am very thankful for your help with their at home learning. You may also send pictures to me through text or email of any work your child has completed. If you still have pictures of completed work to share with me, the final due date for grades has now been extended to June 11. This date is also the last day of school. READING: continue to use the Common Core Ready book that I gave you. Students can read and highlight the passages, and answer all questions, fill in charts, etc. A short lesson from this book that I would like the students to do is Lesson 20 Comparing and Contrasting Two Texts on Pages 324-325.

MATH: Please continue to do about 2 lessons a week in the Math book. Many of you are in different places in the book, so just continue from where you left off. Also, more great skills for at home are: helping them to identify and count coins, and learning how to tell time. Students always need extra practice with these concepts. Review of basic addition/subtraction Math Facts is always helpful too. Please also continue to do double digit addition/subtraction with regrouping (borrowing/carrying). This week I would like students to do Lesson 10 in Module 7 on pages 193-197.

SPELLING: I am continuing to have sight words on the list for Spelling. The idea for this is to have students practice correct spelling of words they use in their writing. The words for this week are: compare, contrast, animals, planet, important, topic, learn. These words are from Lesson 20 Comparing and Contrasting Two Texts mentioned above. You can have students practice these by writing them in sentences and/or stories. When students did Tic Tac Toe activities for Spelling in school, they did such activities as “Hide the words in a picture,” “Do jumping jacks while you spell the word,” “Write the words outside with chalk.” You may also give them a test.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES: students were given online access to Readworks articles. These articles are all related to Science and Social Studies. As a reminder, students can go to www.readworks.org/student. The code is GTE2CJ. The password is 1234. They can read the articles, and answer the questions. Brainpop and Brainpop Junior are also excellent resources for all subject areas. I added some new fun Summer selections to the Readworks articles last week. Remember, these may be printed out or answered online.

WRITING: students may keep a journal that they can write in daily, and illustrate their writing. For the next 3 weeks, students can write in their journals about any topic. Summer activities, etc.

Dear Parents: As you know, teachers will be passing out belongings to students on Tuesday, May 19 (today) and Wednesday, May 20 (tomorrow). I myself originally planned to pass out materials today, but I am not able to come in until tomorrow. Students could also do a writing piece about The Pledge of Allegiance, and what the words of The Pledge mean. They could even write what the vocabulary words mean, such as Allegiance means: Republic Means: Indivisible means:, etc.

Dear Parents: Mr. Short had to change the dates for picking up student belongings and resources because it is supposed to rain on the original dates we planned. The new dates will be Tuesday, May 19th from 1:00-3:00, and Wednesday, May 20th from 1:00-3:00. The street for 2nd graders is still Silvery Lane. Thank you!

Dear Parents: Mr. Short is sending a letter about this, but I wanted to put it in my blog as well. On Thursday and Friday of this week (May 14, 15) teachers will be passing out all remaining belongings to students that were in their desks and lockers. We will also be passing out the Module 8 Math Book, and a workbook for Summer practice, along with white boards (dry erase boards.) Second Grade teachers will be passing these materials on Silvery Lane from 1:00-3:00 PM on Thursday. You may still come for pick up on Friday from 1:00-3:00, but the Second Grade teachers will only be there on Thursday. If you can’t make it on Thursday, other teachers will be passing out materials on Friday. This will be a “drive-through” type of setting, so that nobody needs to enter the school. Thank you so much. Students are all very familiar with the format I use. They can watch my lesson, and copy it into their journal, or onto a paper. They will be naming title, author, characters, setting, problem, solution, favorite part and why. What connections can they make to the story? What did the main character learn in the story? Draw a picture to go with the story. The story they will use is the same one from the Reading Lesson: “Picnic Guests.”
