Dear Parents: I hope you all continue to be well. There have been some additional changes to our Remote Learning Schedule. The school district has given a guideline for students at the Second Grade Level to participate in approximately 20 minutes of learning per subject each day. I know many of you have far exceeded those minutes so far. I just wanted to relieve your concerns that 20 minutes per subject each day is completely adequate. Therefore, 2 lessons of Math a week, rather than 1 lesson a day is now acceptable. The district understands now with many parents also working at home, and families with several students in school, that the workload had to be adjusted. I will continue to contact you through text, phone, or email, as I have before. You may also contact me by call, text, or email if you have any questions, or even to update me on any work your child has finished. I am available Monday-Friday from 8:30AM-3:30PM, and Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00AM-2:00PM. I will also be keeping a log of student participation that Mr. Short will review weekly. Thus far, all students have been actively participating in their assignments, and I am very thankful for your help with their at home learning. You may also send pictures to me through text or email of any work your child has completed.
READING: continue to use the Common Core Ready book that I gave you. Students can read and highlight the passages, and answer all questions, fill in charts, etc. You can use these passages in the book in any order. Many reading passages are related to animals and plants, so you may want to focus on those first, since that is what we are studying in Science. Reading any books is great, and students can write short summaries of what they have read. Please continue in this book. It is an excellent resource. This week, I would like students to complete “Making an Indoor Garden” from this book that can be found on pages 80-88. If you are able to actually create the terrarium with them, that would be excellent, and lots of fun. However, just reading, highlighting, and answering the questions is is all I am requiring.
MATH: Moving forward, please do about 2 lessons a week in the Math book. Many of you are in different places in the book, so just continue from where you left off. Also, more great skills for at home are: helping them to identify and count coins, and learning how to tell time. Students always need extra practice with these concepts. Review of basic addition/subtraction Math Facts is always helpful too. Please also continue to do double digit addition/subtraction with regrouping (borrowing/carrying).
SPELLING: I am continuing to have sight words on the list for Spelling. The idea for this is to have students practice correct spelling of words they use in their writing. The words for this week are: earth, few, garden, holes, it’s, jug, kitchen. These words are all from the reading selection “Making an Indoor Garden.”You can have students practice these by writing them in sentences and/or stories. When students did Tic Tac Toe activities for Spelling in school, they did such activities as “Hide the words in a picture,” “Do jumping jacks while you spell the word,” “Write the words outside with chalk.” You may also give them a test.
SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES: students were given online access to Readworks articles. These articles are all related to Science and Social Studies. Many students have not started to work on these yet. As a reminder, students can go to www.readworks.org/student. The code is GTE2CJ. The password is 1234. They can read the articles, and answer the questions. Brainpop and Brainpop Junior are also excellent resources for all subject areas. I will discuss more about Brainpop in the next few paragraphs. Brainpop has excellent material on plants that students can watch and then write about. I added 3 new selections to the Readworks articles last week. Please have students watch the Brainpop video on Plant Parts, so that they can complete a diagram and writing piece about plants. I will have those 2 recorded lessons linked in this blog. Even if your child has already watched this video, or has already done the diagram, I would like them to watch it again to help them with their informational writing sample.
WRITING: students may keep a journal that they can write in daily, and illustrate their writing. Other writing may include Informational writing, such as facts about animals/plants, or “How To” type of writing, such as “How to Make…”,etc. You may also refer to my March 13 blog for Writing ideas and templates. In 1 of my recorded lessons, I will model an Informational Writing Piece about Plant Parts.
Thank you for your continued help and support. As I have mentioned before, I am available for contact through my cellphone, or email. PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT. I am more than happy to help .You may also feel free to send me pictures of any completed work if you would like to share it with me.
TECHNOLOGY: students are already familiar with using I-Ready, RazKids, and Zearn. These can be used daily, as before. Again, Brainpop is excellent for every subject: Reading, Grammar, Math, Science, and Social Studies. The username is: haighelem and the password is: bpop. I am now able to track student participation, and progress on these websites. Brainpop also has a feature that allows you to print student work, or send it to my email.
