Week of 4/20-4/24

Dear Parents: I hope you all are well. There have been changes made to the Dearborn Public Schools Remote Learning Plan. I will be contacting you through text, phone, or email, as I did before. You may also contact me by call, text, or email if you have any questions, or even to update me on any work your child has finished. I am available Monday-Friday from 8:30AM-3:30PM, and Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00AM-2:00PM. I will also be keeping a log of student participation that Mr. Short will review weekly. Thus far, all students have been actively participating in their assignments, and I am very thankful for your help with their at home learning.

READING: continue to use the Common Core Ready book that I gave you. Students can read and highlight the passages, and answer all questions, fill in charts, etc. You can use these passages in the book in any order. Many reading passages are related to animals and plants, so you may want to focus on those first, since that is what we are studying in Science. Reading any books is great, and students can write short summaries of what they have read. Please continue in this book. It is an excellent resource. Today I am posting in this blog a recording of me reading a passage from this book, and highlighting important details. The students will then answer the questions following the reading. If your child has already done this passage, they can follow along with me, and practice their reading. I will post the answers. This passage begins on page 60 of the Reading book I gave you. (SEEDS GET AROUND)

MATH: continue to do 1 lesson a day in the Module 6 Math Book. Also, more great skills for at home are: helping them to identify and count coins, and learning how to tell time. Students always need extra practice with these concepts. Review of basic addition/subtraction Math Facts is always helpful too. Please also continue to do double digit addition/subtraction with regrouping (borrowing/carrying). Today I am posting in this blog a recorded lesson of Module 6, Lesson 6, and they should then complete the Exit Ticket independently. If your child has already done this lesson, They may follow along with me, and check their work.

SPELLING: I am continuing to have sight words on the list for Spelling. The idea for this is to have students practice correct spelling of words they use in their writing. The words for this week are: very, went, young, around, bury, catch, different. You can have students practice these by writing them in sentences and/or stories. When students did Tic Tac Toe activities for Spelling in school, they did such activities as “Hide the words in a picture,” “Do jumping jacks while you spell the word,” “Write the words outside with chalk.” You may also give them a test.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES: students were given online access to Readworks articles. These articles are all related to Science and Social Studies. Many students have not started to work on these yet. As a reminder, students can go to www.readworks.org/student. The code is GTE2CJ. The password is 1234. They can read the articles, and answer the questions. Brainpop and Brainpop Junior are also excellent resources for all subject areas. I will discuss more about Brainpop in the next few paragraphs. Brainpop has excellent material on plants that students can watch and then write about. I have added 3 new selections this week to the Readworks articles.

WRITING: students may keep a journal that they can write in daily, and illustrate their writing. Other writing may include Informational writing, such as facts about animals/plants, or “How To” type of writing, such as “How to Make…”,etc. You may also refer to my March 13 blog for Writing ideas and templates. Please have students write an informational piece about 3 types of seeds that they learned about, describing the seeds, and how they travel. Use information from today’s Reading lesson SEEDS GET AROUND, page 60 in the Reading Book.

Thank you for your continued help and support. As I have mentioned before, I am available for contact through my cellphone, or email. PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT. I am more than happy to help .You may also feel free to send me pictures of any completed work if you would like to share it with me.

TECHNOLOGY: students are already familiar with using I-Ready, RazKids, and Zearn. These can be used daily, as before. Again, Brainpop is excellent for every subject: Reading, Grammar, Math, Science, and Social Studies. The username is: haighelem and the password is: bpop. I am now able to track student participation, and progress on these websites. Brainpop also has a feature that allows you to print student work, or send it to my email.
