EGG EXPERIMENT OBSERVATIONS: What happens to an egg when you leave it in Vinegar for 24 hours?

Students made observations about plants and animal when they went outside.

Ali Nasser’s nature observations.
I like how he made a t-chart to write things he noticed and I wonder questions
Ali did a good job adding labels to his diagram and he included an observation: What I found fascinating was how the bird’s were picking food and sharing with the squirrels.

Hussein went outside to look for animal tracks. He thinks this might be squirrel tracks. What do you think?

Mohanad and Mahdi found signs of spring.

Mohanad found a worm.

Then he measured it.

Keeping People Safe

Kindergarten Teacher Mrs. Isham made masks for Health Care Workers. Mrs. Isham is a true Engineer and HERO working hard to solve a real world problem.
HOW CAN YOU MAKE A MASK THAT WILL PROTECT OUR HEALTH CARE WORKERS and others who need masks to protect them from the Coronavirus?
Hussein designed a Health Check bracelet to test if
people had a fever.

Hussein made fever bracelets out of duct tape for his entire family, even his baby brother! I love how our Henry Ford Engineers are thinking of ways to design objects that will keep people safe.

Candle Experiment by Ali & Mahdi Hammoud

Ali and Mahdi Hammoud sent an experiment for families to try out. I want to thank Mrs. Amanda Hammoud for supervising this cool experiment and making sure the boys were safe!

STEP 1: Gather the materials that you see in the first photo
STEP 2: Fill the bottom of the bowl with water
STEP 3: Add a few drops of food coloring. Then mark the water level with a crayon or marker.
STEP 4: Put a wax candle in the middle of the bowl
STEP 5: Have an adult help you light the candle
STEP 6: Put a glass over the candle
STEP 7: Observe and record what happens

  • What do you notice about the water level?
  • What do you notice about the candle?
STEP 8: Try the experiment with 2 candles. Are the results the same or different?
SHARE YOUR RESULTS ON CLASS DOJO OR email Ms. McCormick at mccormk@dearbornschools.org

Home STEAM challenges

Be sure to go to my blog and check out the new page called Home STEAM challenges. It lists ideas for STEAM challenges you can do at home while we are off school. Below is a list of materials that will be helpful to start collecting for our Home STEAM challenges.

Please start collecting materials to do STEAM at home. We will be building a lot of things using what you have around the house. “Junk” or recyclable items are exactly what you will need. Some ideas are:
-egg cartons
-cardboard
-plastic containers (yogurt cups, coffee cans, coffee creamer bottles, etc…)
-newspapers
-milk jugs
-bottle tops
-carboard tubes from toilet paper and paper towel rolls
-pop bottles/cans
-netting/bags from onions and oranges
-broken toys (can be used for parts)
-craft materials
-anything you think can be reused in an interesting way!

Check out my last blog post, “Hey, That’s My Monster!” for your first STEAM at Home lesson.

Make sure you comment on this blog or email Ms. McCormick at mccormk@dearbornschools.org. You can also send messages on Class Dojo.

Coronavirus

The overall threat to the general public and in the U.S. remains low, but Dearborn Public Schools are approaching this emerging threat to public health with an abundance of caution. . Use these good hygiene practices to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases.

• Stay home if you are sick, and advise others to do the same.

• Always cover coughs or sneezes with a tissue or sleeve. • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

• Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.

Use an unscented alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and warm water are not available.

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

It’s not too late to get your flu shot! While the influenza vaccine does not protect against COVID-19 infection, it can help keep you healthy during the flu season.

Ornament Sale

Stop by the STEAM room to buy a hand made creation. Every dollar we raise will help feed a homeless family for a day. Below are photos of the 6 raffle baskets and some of the items for sale. Raffle tickets are 50 cents and everything else is 50 cents to $5.00.

Parent Meeting

I would like to thank all of the parents who came out to the STEAM parent meeting. We had fun creating Turkey hideouts to help families learn how to do an Engineering Challenge at home by using the Engineering Design Process. The photo below shows the steps of the Engineering Design Process and Dream houses created by Henry Ford students using the EDP. Stay tuned for photos from the meeting.

Dream House Challenges

Henry Ford students have been working hard on an Engineering design challenge in the STEAM lab. First , we read the book, The Big Orange Splot.

Click on the underlined link above to hear the story.

Then the students designed plans to create their own dream house. Here is a picture of the kindergarten students using blocks to create a foam house.

I can’t wait to see how all the students’ final dream houses come out!
