This is a survey that I will use to inform how I adapt my online assignments for next week. I have also created one for students that they can find on Google Classroom under “classwork.”! Remote learning has been a unique and challenging experience for all of us, and I am committed to making it work for our classroom community the best I can. Any constructive feedback would be appreciated, as this is a new process for everyone involved! Please note I will most be able to take your family’s feedback into account if you and your student respond to the surveys before Sunday.

Week at a Glance for Week of 3/23/20

Hello everyone! Here is a brief layout of what assignments to expect for the coming week. Here are a few announcements before we get into assignments:

Virtual Spirit Week!!!

Students can participate in the Spirit Week Challenges listed in the flyer below. Parents, you can post student’s photos on your own social media feed for your friends and families to see.  On Thursday, you can share your picture with Ms. Tiba at tibaz@dearbornschools.org

Announcements Specific to Our Class

  • Assignments have a suggested due date in their title (“Monday math,” “Thursday ReadWorks,” “Due Friday – Writing Prompt”) but will no longer have a listed due date on the assignment. I will leave it up to families to decide the pace at which they complete assignments. It would be wonderful if the week’s assignments could be completed by Sunday . Again, I recommend that students be working on their academic skills every day, which is why I suggest completing the daily assignments when possible.
  • Students will receive 10 points for effort on each assignment, but please remember that this grade does not factor into report cards. The ten points I give are to help students feel a sense of progress as they work from home.
  • I am going to be working on report cards this week. Students’ report card grades will only reflect the work they did before the temporary school closure. The district has not released information to teachers about how report cards will be distributed. You likely can expect the report cards next week via mail or email, but I will update you when I know more.

Without further ado, here is a quick summary of the assignments for this week. Remember that all assignments for a given day will be listed in a blog post at 8 am each day, and that all assignments for the day go live at 8 am on Google Classroom.

Math

4th: Fourth graders will complete work for lessons 12, 13, and 14 of Module 4. They will be supported by videos, the homework answers, and feedback from me on the problem set. Also, students will do these lessons on Zearn. These lessons are on the topic of symmetry. Students should be able to succeed on this work at home fairly well.

5th: Fifth graders will complete work on lessons 4, 5, and 6 of Module 5 this week. They will be supported by videos, the homework answers, and feedback from me on the problem set. Also, students will do these lessons on Zearn. These lessons are on the topic of solving for volume using multiplication. Students should be able to succeed on this work at home fairly well.

ELA

  • Daily read aloud assignments, to be completed either live on Zoom at 12:30 (link: https://us04web.zoom.us/j/267730219; Meeting ID 267-730-219) OR by listening to the YouTube video
  • On Tuesday, students will receive an assignment for their individual reading group. It will include videos from me to support the understanding of the chapters they are about to read, and well as a worksheet they should complete by the end of the week.
  • Each grade will have a writing assignment due Friday related to their work in social studies. Each will be writing a paragraph about a specified topic. The writing assignment will be available tomorrow. Students should watch the video of me explaining the assignment, fill out the graphic organizer, then write their paragraph.
  • There will be three ReadWorks assignments this week related to what we are studying in other subjects or current events. Students will answer comprehension questions.

Social Studies

This week, students will receive multiple social studies assignments (I am aiming for four, but it will more likely be three). Students will watch videos, visit interesting websites, or complete short readings, then answer questions via Google Quizzes or worksheets.

These assignments connect to the social studies curriculum and are intended to enhance students’ understanding of what they have learned or prepare them to learn new material when we return to school.

Science

There is only one assignment for this week in science. It will be made available Monday and should be completed this week. It is an activity that we were to complete in class as an enrichment opportunity. Students will follow each step in a Mystery Science lesson and complete a set of worksheets as the instructions tell them to. The assignments asks them to apply about what they learned about the Dust Bowl to prevent future dust storms.

Need to Reach Out to Me?

I will be available from 9 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday on the following platforms:

-Remind (link: https://www.remind.com/join/msjuntune)

Assignments for 3/20/19

We’ve almost made it through our first week of remote learning! Here are today’s assignments:

Math

4th Grade: Do lessons 10 and 11 on Zearn.

5th Grade: Do lessons 2 and 3 on Zearn.

ELA

  1. Read a chapter book for 45 minutes.
  2. Live read aloud at 12:30 on Zoom, or catch up on your own time using the YouTube video on the Google Classroom assignment.
  3. Catch up on any ReadWorks assignment that is not submitted.

Please make sure students hold onto the worksheets because they will use them next week.

Sharpen the Saw Challenge: Stretch your legs.

It’s easy for our muscles to get tight when we are home all day!

Homework for the Weekend

There will be no homework for the weekend besides reading 30 minutes each day. This will give students time to catch up assignments, and me time to evaluate how this week has gone and figure out what to do going forward.

Need Help?

I will be available from 9 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday on the following platforms:

-Remind (link: https://www.remind.com/join/msjuntune)

-Email (juntuna@dearbornschools.org)

Check-In about Daily Assignments

Viewing Feedback

I have returned feedback on Monday’s work! Work from Tuesday will be returned to you tonight with feedback. My goal is always to return work to you within two days of when it was turned in (Monday work back on Wednesday, Tuesday work back on Thursday…)

Here is a video about how to view feedback:

Here are some things I want you to know about my feedback on assignments:

  • These assignments do not count toward points in each subject. They will not count toward report cards. They are to make sure students continue using academic skills.
  • My assignments are each 10 points. If students complete the work, they get the 10 points. This is to help students feel a sense of accomplishment and progress.
  • My feedback is meant to encourage students. I am frustrated that I cannot help my students as directly as I can in class. I will ask them questions and point out things that may help them, but may also sometimes be limited to a “nice work!”
  • Students can use the comments to write back to me about their feedback! Many are already doing this. They can also email me: juntuna@dearbornschool.org
  • There are not going to be any tests or quizzes until we return to in-person school and review content.

Norms and Expectations Around Completion of Work During Remote Learning

I want us to all be on the same page about why daily assignments are happening. Here are some responses to questions I have been asked by several different people:

  • My first priority is student well-being. If a student is feeling overwhelmed or unsafe, I understand a family needs to focus on the child’s well-being, not on completing assignments.
  • I also know many of you are sharing internet services and devices among many family members. If this means students cannot turn in assignments on a given day, I am flexible. We need to make this work for each family.
  • The assignments I post daily are intended as resources for you. They for you to provide your child structure and opportunities to work on academic skills, if that is what you are looking for.
  • Students can always turn in work after the due date. Please have your students work at a pace that works for them and your family schedule. The reasons the due dates are there is that I want students to keep their skills going, but I realize it has caused to much pressure. Next week, assignments will still be suggested for certain days (“Monday Math,” “Tuesday Reading,” etc.) but there will be no due dates. Assignments will still be posted daily as resources for you, but set up a schedule that works for your family.
  • Looking for more educational resources beyond what I am assigning? Check your “Remote Learning Document” sent by email. I have suggested resources for you, and I have others upon request.

Assignments for 3/19/20

Online Learning So Far

Below is a snapshot of the best part of my day each day. I have LOVED doing these online lessons through Zoom. Yesterday’s lesson had over half the class participating!!! I hope students will continue to participate. I am working on more opportunities for us to be face to face during this time of remote learning.

Art

Mr. Goecke has posted as art assignment on the Google Classroom stream. You can find it on the top of the stream. Here is his message to you:

Hello Ms. Juntenen’s class! Here is your art objective for the week.

A Mechanimal is a hybrid (combination) of an animal and a machine. Choose at least one animal to combine with mechanical parts to create an original Mechanimal. Start with pencil, then use any materials you have at home to darken the outline and add color. You may add a background to show the environment where your Mechanimal lives. Take inspiration, but don’t copy from, the examples below.

If you send Ms. Juntunen pictures of your Mechanimal, I will share them with the class!
