Week at a Glance: 4/27-5/1

From Principal: Survey Request

Dear Parents,

I hope you and your family are safe and healthy. Today we completed the first week of our new Continuity plan guidelines and I am seeking your feedback. Below is a short survey to help us better understand the needs of the community as a whole. The collected results will allow us to make some well-informed decisions moving forward. It is anonymous and greatly appreciated.

Make sure you fill out the survey I posted late last week if you intend to check one out!

Progress Reports will Be Finalized Mondays

I have gotten a few questions about progress reports. They are in the process of being completed. I will re-send them to you all tomorrow with complete data so we can track your student’s progress. This will be the process each week.

Assignments for this Week

In lieu of typing out the week’s assignments in the text of this blog bost, I will provide you the Weekly Schedule of Assignments. It includes detailed descriptions of the activities in an easy-to-read format.

4th Grade Weekly Schedule of Assignments:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LNkquaXWV2vUa0_i8RCqgHxTBMToaagIo_XQQukp2js/edit?usp=sharing

5th Grade Weekly Schedule of Assignments:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LUo7YTKDYGXRHiSbK4I237uTGwd7PHEXoHRZj_WtLcI/edit?usp=sharing

Use this schedule! Print it out and put it on your fridge, or bookmark it on your computer and refer back to it every day! This is an AWESOME checklist for students to keep themselves accountable.

No Live Video Lessons this Week

I will do pre-recorded lessons this week while teachers are potentially being trained on a new video lesson platform. It is likely the district will keep Google Meet restricted due to some security breeches with the software last week. Please see Dr. Maleyko’s public comments on this for more information: https://superintendent.dearbornschools.org/

It breaks my heart to not be able to teach students live, so I will be working to get video lessons back up and running on a district-approved platform. My hope is to begin offering these next week.

My Availability

I will be available from 9 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday on the following platforms:

-Remind (link: https://www.remind.com/join/msjuntune)

-Email (juntuna@dearbornschools.org)

-Teacher Office Hours are on Monday through Wednesday, then Friday from 3 pm to 3:30 pm. I will post a Google Voice phone number that students can call in to. More details to come.

-I can also set up a phone call with you for the following day if you need support that cannot be fully addressed over Remind or email. Since I will also be focusing on my family during this time, I cannot guarantee a same-day phone call.

Assignments for 4/24/20

Live video communication cancelled until further notice

Due to security issues, the district has asked teachers to press pause on Google Meets until further notice. This means I am temporarily postponing live reading lessons, office ours, and our family meeting scheduled for Monday. I will let you know when these activities can safely resume.

Social Studies

4th:

Starting this week, we will be beginning a new unit in Social Studies called Exploring Economics. We will be learning the first lesson called What is Economics? There will be assignments posted on Tuesday and Thursday this week.

Here is the description of Tuesday’s assignment.

  1. There are some vocabulary cards with definitions that go with the lesson this week. Feel free to use them as flash cards and read them over this week.
  2. You can give an example to your child to help them understand the term “economics” if you would like. Example: Have one candy bar (or desired snack) and say, “I would like to give this away” “Who would like it?” (Have everyone in your family hold up their hands.) Explain that you only have one and more than one person wants it- there is not enough to go around. Remind your child that an economic term to explain this scenario is “scarcity.” The term scarcity leads us to the definition of economics which is the study of how society uses their scarce resources to get goods and services.
  3.  Watch the Brainpop about Goods and Services
    https://jr.brainpop.com/socialstudies/economics/goodsandservices/

Username: hullroom207 Password: lindbergh2020

  1. Read the online MI textbook. Section 1: What is Economics (pages 56-58)

http://textbooks.wmisd.org/Downloads/4th/Chapter2.pdf

  1. Answer the “Stop and Think” questions on the Google Doc posted on Google Classroom after reading the section. Do not forget to try the interactive videos and activities in the section!

5th:

Fifth graders will be doing research of what living in the colonies was like, and then will use what they learn to write a diary entry as if they lived in colonial times. There is a video to explain the assignment to them that they should watch before attempting it.

Important Takeaways about the Learning Plan:

  • Completion of assignments is expected and will be reflected on June report cards.
  • I will work with you and your family to remove obstacles that prevent your student from completing assignments.
  • We will be learning new content in the remaining weeks of the school year.
  • Every week, students will work on each of the core subjects (math, reading, writing, and science/social studies) for 100 minutes each.
  • I will continue providing feedback on assignments to students several times a week.

Let’s see how the online learning plan goes this week, and then I will host a family meeting about it next Monday (April 27th) at 6 pm. Please plan to participate if you are interested.

Students will be completing a opinion writing piece this week in response to the prompt “Should community members stay home while people are getting sick from the coronavirus?” For today’s assignment, students will pick a stance on this issue. Students should watch my pre-recorded video lesson, complete the readings, and fill out the worksheet on Google Classroom. This assignment is due this evening so students can be ready for the next assignment tomorrow.

Online Learning Plan and the Week of 4/20/20 – 4/24/20 at a Glance

Dearborn’s “Continuity of Learning Plan” Begins!

Starting tomorrow, Dearborn Public Schools is enacting its online learning plan as required by the state of Michigan. The great news for our classroom is that not much will change in terms of work load and lessons offered. It is important to note that completion of assignments and participation in lessons in expected from this point on, and will factor into June report cards.

Here is a letter from Superintendent Maleyko introducing the inline learning plan:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PXb_0LYdHkfPbQt6y0aju-7itbTrDFPt_yYH2TyQY20/edit?usp=sharing

Here is a description of the plan and several documents describing it. I recommend reading the document titled “Dearborn Public Schools MDE Continuity of Learning Application Plan April 2020” for in-depth information:

https://dearbornschools.org/services/dearborn-public-schools-continuity-of-learning-plan/

I will clarify the main points of the online learning plan in tomorrow’s post.

Two New Resources to Help Families Keep Track of Work

On Mondays, I am offering two new documents that will help myself and families stay in communication about student’s learning and work completion.

  1. Weekly Schedule of Assignments” which will summarize the weekly assignments I describe in the blog on one-easy to read page. This will allow families to plan ahead for assignments. This document will be posted to the blog on Mondays.
  2. Weekly Progress Report” which will document what assignments students turned in from the previous week and serve as a starting point for us to discuss next steps in student learning. My hope is this will helpful to families since completion of assignments is now expected and required. This will be sent to each parent’s email.

Math for the Week

4th Grade: We will complete lessons 4, 5, and 6 of module 5 this week. New math lessons will come out Monday (due Tuesday), Wednesday (due Thursday), and Friday (due Sunday). Expected Changes Next Week to Remote Learning

Hello! Expect information about Dearborn’s online learning plan to come out next week. There will be some updates to how we are conducting online learning based on state guidelines. I will give you information as soon as it is available, and I’ll host a parent meeting about the new learning plan once the district rolls it out.

***Important for you know now: per new district policy, student’s work starting on Monday through the end of the year will be counted on the end of year report cards. Completion of assignments is an expectation, and I will do everything in my power to make sure your student has the resources they need to complete their work. I am developing new resources to help families plan for weekly assignments and what students have turned in. I will be able to give more information about this once the district learning plan is available to everyone.

Hello! Teachers have been asked to prepare for the new learning plan to start this coming Monday, April 20th. This changes my availability in the following ways:
