The next two weeks (up until June 5th) will be part of the grades I put on report cards, so please encourage your student to keep their focus. I want all your students to be successful, so let me know what I can do to support them! I am available for pep talks upon request 🙂

5th Grade Speech for Graduation

I will explain this to fifth graders TODAY during our class meet-up (around 12:45) and TOMORROW before our lesson (have students log in at 12:25).

Here are the written instructions I shared with students on Google Classroom:

“You will each be writing a farewell speech for our fifth grade class. One of your speeches will be picked to be read at our 5th Grade Promotion ceremony on June 11th. Even though everyone is writing a speech, you will only be in the running to read it aloud if you choose to by answering YES to the first question on the Google Doc.

Must Do’s:
-The speech should be 2 – 3 minutes long when read out loud.
-I recommend writing your speech on paper, then typing it. Write the speech in your own words.
-Your speech should talk about the things you appreciate about Lindbergh, the staff, the students and the Lindbergh community. You should also talk about the things you will miss when you move from Lindbergh.
-The speech should have an encouraging message for your fellow fifth graders for the future.
-Your speech should not be too specific, for example please don’t just list the teachers you had but talk in general about the staff, experiences you had as a group, etc.

How the one speech for graduation will be picked:

  1. If you would like to be considered to read your speech and you say YES on the Google Doc, your speech will be one of the ones we vote on. I will not accept your speech if it is turned in after Tuesday.
  2. I will read each speech aloud in a video. It will be anonymous, so no one will know who wrote each speech.
  3. After watching the video, you will vote for the speech you like best. You will have next Thursday and Friday to vote.
  4. The speech that receives the most votes will be read at our virtual graduation ceremony on June 11th.”

Wednesday, 5/20/20

I will not be available after 1 pm today due to a non-instructional work obligation. This means no office hours today. I thank you for your patience.

Short Week

There is school today or tomorrow, but not Friday. The only new assignment tomorrow will be our reading lesson at 12:30. I highly recommend getting all your student’s other work done before the break so they can fully enjoy it. However, to allow flexibility, I won’t check work from today and tomorrow until after Tuesday. Use these calendars to keep track of assignments:

Class Meet-Up on Big Blue Button

We will meeting up on Big Blue Button at 12:30 today. This is optional. I am offering it as an opportunity for students to see each other and have a sense of community.

Math

There is a Math Check-In as part of each grade’s math lesson. Students need to complete this before or after they do the other math work assigned. Students will receive a grade based on their accuracy. This grade will not give them a lower or higher grade on the report card. It’s just to help them to get a sense of how they are doing.

5th grade: Lesson 18 of Module 5. Watch Knowledge on the Go video and complete the problem set. Due Tuesday night. Students also need to have completed lessons 17 and 18 on Zearn by Tuesday. There will be one assignment on Google Classroom for this due Tuesday.

5th grade: Lesson 9 of Module 6. Watch Knowledge on the Go video and complete the problem set. Due Tuesday night. Students also need to have completed lessons 8 and 9 on Zearn by Tuesday. There will be one assignment on Google Classroom for this due Tuesday.

ELA

1- Personal Narrative Writing Assignments 1 and 2: By 10 am I will have added a video to the already existing assignment that shows students how to add pictures to their slideshows. Students will have today and tomorrow to finish filling out the slideshow and adding pictures.

2- Read 30 minutes.

Social Studies

4th Grade Incentives assignment: Students should watch the instructional video about how incentives work in our economy. They will read a few pages from our textbook on the topic, then answer some questions to reflect on their learning. Due Tuesday.

5th Grade Armies and Battles assignment: Students will read about and then compare and contrast the British and American Armies. They will learn about two important battles in the way, then watch an episode of Liberty’s Kids to extend their learning on the war.

If you are looking for an extension of social studies learning, the entire Liberty’s Kids television series about the American Revolution is on YouTube. These episodes are very accurate and I highly recommend students watch more than the ones I am able to assign: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHeaIWvdbER3Ic90BzhPsH2aJ5KI3UtmM
