A Message About Safety from Ms. Tiba

Lindbergh Community

To ensure student safety and maintain communication, I am sharing the following information to inform and not to alarm you regarding an incident experienced by one of our students.

During dismissal, one of our students was walking home on North Waverly when a white Explorer with tinted windows started following him, it honked its horn at him and appeared to drive and stop as the student continued to walk.  It wasn’t until the student got to his car that the other car left.  The student did the right thing and stayed away from the car.  This incident has been reported to the proper channels.

Please make sure to review stranger danger with your child.  Below are a few tips if needed:

  • If students walk or ride bikes to school, it is best to do so in groups
  • Be alert of your surroundings
  • Identify safe houses and adults in the neighborhood
  • Report any suspicious activities to an adult

We appreciate your help as we work together to keep all of our students safe.

5th Grade Test Dates Clarification

The fifth grade mid-module math test has been cancelled due to the need for fifth graders to take their social studies unit test next Thursday, Dec. 12th. The review sheet for the test was sent home today. Parts of the review will be reviewed on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday leading up to the test.

Students should still expect a math test the last week of school before break. I am still finalizing the date, and will let you know once I know.

Celebrations from Assembly yesterday!!

Yesterday was an exceptional day for our class! At our school assembly, we were awarded the Golden Tray for being the most exemplary at lunch, and the Golden Brush for being the most focused class in Art.

We also had two AMAZING performers from our classroom sing in front of the entire school! Please see pictures of their performances below. Congrats to Vera Ibrahim and Alaina Anani for a job well done!

PTA Announcements

Please see below for two important announcements from the PTA related to Lindbergh events this holiday season.

Adopt-A-Family

Greetings Flyer Families and Friends! We all know that the holidays are supposed to be times of togetherness and joy, but for many families they can be stressful and anxiety filled. The idea was brought to us to launch a drive to help a local family in need this holiday and everyone was excited to be a part of it.So here it is Flyers…The First Annual Lindbergh Adopt-A Family Program!
This year we will be supporting the family of a local woman, recently divorced and living in supportive housing with her 7 children. She’s a graduate of Divine Child and works full time but is having a hard time making ends meet. The children range in ages from 6 to 18, two of which have a disability. Each family member took some time and wrote out a wish list. The lists are far from flashy and contain many simple necessities. Things like fluffy blankets and pillows, twin sheets, household supplies, boots and shoes. They also include fun things like footballs, Pokemon cards, scrunchies, Popsockets, gift cards and purses. We’d love to make this a holiday to remember for this family so here’s where we come in Flyers!!
We understand not everyone is able to get into the school to choose a tag so we’ve established 3 ways for you to donate:1. Select a tag from the “gift tree” that we have placed in the lobby. Wrap the gift, attach the tag and place in the bins we will place in the lobby. Take some time to look at the tags, there are some good ones in there! Again, they aren’t flashy and many are only in the $5 range.2. Drop a gift card in the office in ANY denomination (no gift is too small) to one of the following locations:    Target, Amazon, Kroger OR Aldi 3. The PTA will have a table and donation jar at Bingo for Books this Friday to collect cash donations, things already purchased and help w tag selection!

These are by no means the only ways to give. We are open to suggestions. The only thing that is FIRM is the deadline.DEADLINE FOR DONATIONS IS DECEMBER 16th
We’ve already gotten things rolling with EXTREMELY generous gifts from Executive Dentistry in Dearborn and The Dearborn Goodfellows!(If you know of a Lindbergh family that could use some help this season, please contact Ms. Tiba or any PTA board member

5th Grade Only – Blue Ribbon Speech Opportunity

Ms. Tiba has invited 5th graders in our class to write speeches for the upcoming Dearborn Public Schools board meeting. Lindbergh is being honored at the board meeting for winning the National Blue Ribbon Award. The topic of the speech is, “What it means to be a blue ribbon school.” To be eligible, students need to bring in a handwritten or typed draft of their speech tomorrow, and be available to attend the board meeting this Monday, December 9th at 7 pm.

Tomorrow, Ms. Tiba and the 5th grade teachers will review the speeches that are turned in and let students know if they have been chosen to speak. I have spoken with all the 5th grade students about these details, and I have included them in bullet form below.

  • Speech topic: “What it means to be a blue ribbon school?” You can write about why Lindbergh deserved the blue ribbon award.
  • Drafts of speeches are due tomorrow.
  • Students must be available to give the speeches on Monday, Dec. 9th at 7 pm.

ELA

In reading, students are going to work on understanding new vocabulary in their reading. Small group instruction will continue.

In writing, students will outline their persuasive writing. Students have chosen one of the following topics to write about in their persuasive essay:

  • Should children under the age of 13 have a cell phone?
  • Should students have recess every day?
  • (5th grade only) Should students learn about Christopher Columbus in school?

Math

5th Grade Math

Fifth graders will be continuing our study of fractions. This week, we are focusing on adding fractions with unlike denominators, as well as mixed fractions. Our goal is to get through lessons three, four, and five this week.

Students will take the mid-module test for this unit next Friday, December 13th. The review will be passed out at the end of this week. Please note that the test is coming up so quickly because the unit is short.

4th Grade Math

Fourth graders are continuing their unit about multiplying and dividing numbers with multiple digits. This week, they are multiplying numbers in the hundreds and thousands using the standard algorithm. Our goal is to get through lessons 9 through 12 this week.

Students will take the mid-module test for this unit next Friday, December 13th. The review will be passed out at the end of this week.

Science

Students completed an investigation today of why the constellations change with the seasons. Ask them to explain it to you at home! Students will take a quiz on this investigation tomorrow. If students wish to study, they can use this link: https://mysteryscience.com/astronomy/mystery-4/seasons-earth-s-revolution/75?t=student

Later this week, students will investigate the phases of the moon. They will take the quiz related to this material Friday. Here is the link to the lesson so students can study: https://mysteryscience.com/astronomy/mystery-5/moon-phases-lunar-cycle/77?t=student

Social Studies

5th grade Social Studies

Students are finishing a lesson about early exchanges between European explorers, Native Americans, and African slaves. Next, they will begin their final lesson in this unit, which is on the topic of Colombian Exchange.

Fifth graders will have a social studies test before the end of the year. The final test date will be announced sometime next week, with a weeks’ notice at least.

4th Grade Social Studies

Students are continuing a lesson on the “push” factors that motivate people to move away from where they are living, and the “pull” factors that motivate people to move to certain locations.

4th graders will have a social studies test before the end of the year. The final test date will be announced sometime next week, with a weeks’ notice at least.

Spelling

Spelling words are the Week 12 list that can be found at this link: https://www.spellingcity.com/users/JuntunenA

The words are homophones- they sound the same but have different meanings and spellings. Students will hear the words in a sentence and then will have to write the correct spelling based on what makes sense. There will be 15 words plus a bonus word. There are no cold words this week.

Week of 11/25

Hello everyone! Below, please see the classwork and homework for this week. It is a shorter week- only two days! Students will have homework Monday evening, but the only homework between Tuesday and Sunday will be to read 20 minutes a day (except for one optional assignment for 4th grade related to interviewing a family member). Students’ time off should be spent enjoying time with family. I encourage students to read with a family member each day, as this is a time of year where families gather together.

ELA

Given the short week, we are holding off on learning a new reading strategy as a whole class. Instead, we will focus on individualized instruction this week. Every student will meet with me either Monday or Tuesday to touch base about their progress as a reader.

In our opinion writing unit, students will become familiar with the grading rubric and use it to analyze some pieces of opinion writing. Students will also find out which prompt they have been assigned to write a persuasive essay about.

Math

Fifth Grade Math

Students will be sent home with their exam grades on Tuesday (one student needs to finish their exam, and I cannot release answers until i have received all the tests back). In the meantime, fifth graders are beginning a new unit on adding and subtracting fractions. We will complete two lessons this week. See the guide to homework for Monday below:

Fourth Grade Math

Fourth graders are in the middle of a unit about multiplying and dividing numbers with multiple digits. In the next two lessons, they are using place value disks to represent multiplication of two, three, and four-digit numbers. Below is the guide to supporting student’s with Monday’s homework.

Science

In science, students are engaging in a discussion about how the position of the sun in relation to the earth impacts earth’s seasons. Students will engage in the investigation Monday and take a quiz on it Tuesday. Please note: we will only be engaging in this lesson once before they take the assessment. If students wish to review the lesson Monday night before their quiz on Tuesday, I have included a link to the lesson below for their review.

Social Studies

Fifth Grade Social Studies

Students are engaging in a lesson about early exchanges between European explorers, Native Americans, and African slaves. They will read multiple primary sources about these topics. This lesson provides context and background knowledge for their final lesson in the unit about the Colombian Exchange.

Fourth Grade Social Studies

Students are beginning a lesson on the “push” factors that motivate people to move away from where they are living, and the “pull” factors that motivate people to move to certain locations.

On Tuesday, fourth graders will be sent home with an assignment for social studies. The assignment requires students to interview between two and four family members about their family history (the places they have moved to and from). The assignment will not be due until late next week, but students will likely have more opportunity to interview family members over the break. For this reason, students will have a better quality assignment if they complete it over break. Again, the assignment is optional over the break, as it will not be due until later in the social studies unit.

There is no spelling quiz this week. That is all the classwork and homework. Fifth grade families, please be ready to fill our yearbook forms tomorrow night if you want a yearbook!! They are due Tuesday.

5th grade only – yearbooks

Hello fifth grade families! I sent home yearbook order forms a few weeks ago and only received one back. I am wondering if some did not reach home. I spoke with Ms. Prather in the office and she says that anyone who is interested in purchasing a yearbook can turn in their form on or before Tuesday. I will send home extra copies of the order form Monday. If you student returns the order and payment by Tuesday, the office will be able to take your order.

A Note from the Lindbergh office:

Lindbergh Flyers,

This week our school will be supporting the “Battle Against Hunger” food drive initiative.  As a school, we understand the importance of supporting those in need and giving back to the community.  To increase participation in this great cause, we will have a pajama day on Thursday, November 21.  In order to participate in pajama day, we are asking for each child to bring in at least two canned and/or boxed non-perishable food items to school for donation.

If you are interested in joining the fun, please remember:

  • Wear regular shoes-no slippers
  • Come to school in jammies that are appropriate for school and the weather

Thank you for your help!
