Class Service Project and Supplies Request

Lindbergh’s “Bags of Hope” Collection

Our school will be collecting items to fill reusable bags and giving these bags to a homeless shelter in Detroit.

Our class will be donating Slim Jims (or any original flavor beef jerky).  We are requesting every student in our class bring in the above item by Wednesday, February 26, 2020.

Our Student Lighthouse Team will assemble the bags and take them to the homeless shelter.  Help us make this community service project a success!

Request for Tissues

Our classroom is running low on tissues. It would be deeply appreciated if a few families could send in boxes of tissues for the classroom. Thank you!

Report Cards, 4th Grade Test, and STEM Program Invitations

Report Cards

Report cards are going home today. Please review your child’s report card, then return the empty envelope back to me with your signature.

Regarding student’s writing grade: All students were given a 3 in writing to reflect that they are progressing in their opinion writing ability. We will complete another opinion writing project this year, and then I will grade students on their final product rather than their progress.

This grade is not to reflect student’s level or quality of effort, but to reflect that all students in the class are progressing toward grade level expectations for writing. I will be submitting written feedback to students to help them improve their next opinion writing project.

Please email me at juntuna@dearbornschools.org or contact me on Remind with any questions.

4th Grade Social Studies Test

This end of unit test has been scheduled for next Tuesday. The review sheet is going home with students today and is due Monday, Feb. 3rd.

Important STEM Program Information from Ms. Tiba

To all 5th grade parents that have an interest in their child attending STEM next year please review the following established process. Keep in mind that STEM is a Magnet school located on the Dearborn Heights Campus with the Michael Berry Career Center. This means that all parents are responsible for providing transportation to and from school. Our start and end times are aligned to high school times, 7:15 am – 2:15 pm.

There is no enrollment process for our new 6th grade class.  Instead, we will be sending out invitations to the top 120 5th grade students in the district and asking them to apply. If your student is in district, but not a DPS student, there will be an application posted on our blog (https://stem.dearbornschools.org/) mid-February .

We have set a minimum NWEA reading score of 222 and a minimum NWEA math score of 231 as our baseline (winter 2020 5th grade scores).  In addition, students will need to have earned a 3 or a 4 on their 4th grade math and reading M-STEP tests.  However, having these minimum scores does not mean that a student will receive an invitation.  The top 120 students may very well achieve beyond these minimum scores.  Invitations to apply will be mailed home sometime in March.

For a non-DPS student that applies, his/her application will be ranked with the 120 invitations that we send home to DPS students.  If s/he ranks in the top 120, s/he will be emailed an invitation letter and be asked to email his/her interest in attending in the Fall.  If s/he does not rank in the top 120, s/he will not receive a final invitation.  Again, meeting the minimum scores does not guarantee acceptance.

Once the 120 students have responded to their invitations, if we have more than 60 students “accept”, there will be a lottery.

Week of 1/27/20

NWEA Updates

This is our final week of NWEA testing. All students have begun the three tests (math, reading, and language) in previous weeks, and all students will finish them this week if they haven’t already.

Tuesday through Thursday, students will be engaged in an hour of make-up NWEA testing until all students in the class have finished all three tests. Please encourage your students to have patience as other students finish.

We will begin goal-setting with our NWEA scores this week. Once all scores are in, you will receive updates on your students’ scores.

Homework Posting

I am trying something new for posting what the homework is each week. Students learn what their homework is each day from a slideshow that I show at the end of the school day. I update this slideshow each day in case the homework changes from what I had planned.

From now on, I will link the homework slideshow in my weekly post. It will also always be available on the homework tab on this blog. This way, you will always receive the most up to date information about what homework is due.

Please see the link of details about this week’s homework: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1yR_GuZ_epevjYIT2nWt4mDfh2K-qE-zk8qBIM4DnrR4/edit?usp=sharing

5th Grade Slide Show

Hello 5th Grade Parents!

Where has the time gone? Can you believe how close we are to celebrating our 5th graders moving on to their next adventure?

There are 5th grade events that will take place during the spring as well as end of the year celebrations.  These are still in the planning stages.  More communication will be coming out with details for each event as soon as everything is finalized.

During the 5th grade promotion ceremony on the last day of school, a slide show/video of all of the 5th graders is shown.  We need EVERYONE to send in photos of your 5th grader.  These photos can be from kindergarten all the way through 5th grade.  They can include: photos of just your 5th grader, photos with their classmates, photos from field trips, photos from any school clubs they belong to (i.e. scouts, band, etc.), and photos from the various Lindbergh functions – anything having to do with Lindbergh.  Pictures that are sent in that did not take place at school or during a school event will not be used.

Please email the photos to: FlyersClassOf2020@gmail.com

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Stacey Krol (734-751-1658).  Thank you!

Kids Heart Challenge

The Kids Heart Challenge (formerly known as Jump Rope for Heart) is a fun and exciting event where your student learns about their heart while helping others by raising money for the American Heart Association. It prepares your child for success through physical and emotional well-being.

Next week we’ll be kicking off our annual Kids Heart Challenge program. Your student will get a chance to meet Alexa, the featured heart hero for this year, along with the awesome new Hero crew who are here to teach us all about taking care of our own hearts and help others along the way.

Get a jump start! Take a moment to register your student online today – upon registering your student can select their heart healthy challenge and share their page with others. Students who raise $150 online donation by January 22nd will earn a special gift! It is FREE to register, and the class who has the highest percentage of students signed up will earn an EXTRA PE DAY!

To register, visit http://www2.heart.org/goto/Lindbergh

Thank you for your support of our PE program, and the American Heart Association!

Students will be completing their final investigation in our space unit on Monday. I have decided not to give a quiz on this topic so students can focus on preparing for their science test.

The science test will be Thursday. The front page of the review sheet is due Tuesday, and the back side is due Wednesday.

I have posted the lessons for students to review on Google classroom. This will help them answer the questions on the study guide.

Students are welcome to the review sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday as long as they have their study guide with them and have attempted to answer each question on the worksheet.

Social studies

We are putting a “pause” on social studies this week to focus on finishing DRA tests, completing NWEA math testing, and publishing our persuasive writing pieces.
