Week of 1/27/20

NWEA Updates

This is our final week of NWEA testing. All students have begun the three tests (math, reading, and language) in previous weeks, and all students will finish them this week if they haven’t already.

Tuesday through Thursday, students will be engaged in an hour of make-up NWEA testing until all students in the class have finished all three tests. Please encourage your students to have patience as other students finish.

We will begin goal-setting with our NWEA scores this week. Once all scores are in, you will receive updates on your students’ scores.

ELA

Students will begin new reading groups this week based on their DRA scores and instructional needs. A few students are still finishing their DRA tests.

All students will also be engaged in a unit about informational writing. We will begin this unit this week and continue it for several weeks.

Math

5th Grade

Fifth graders will solve multi-step story problems in groups on Monday, review for their test Tuesday, and take their math test Wednesday. Later in the week we will start working on more complex fraction mutiplication.

Your students’ review sheet is due Tuesday. Students are invited to the review as long as there is evidence that they have attempted every question on the review guide.

4th Grade

Students will engage in lessons this week where they apply knowledge of prime and composite numbers to more complex division problems. The goal is to learn lessons 23 through 27.

Science

Students will finish their initial inquiry into the Dust Bowl, and then begin a new lesson with introductory information about the water cycle.

Social Studies

Fifth grade will finish their study of Jamestown this week and begin studying other colonies established by England in the 1600s.

Fourth graders will finish up their unit with a few lessons considering humans’ impact on the environment. Fourth graders will take their end of unit test sometime next week. I will announce the test date and send home the study guide at least a week in advance.
