Social Studies

4th:

Starting this week, we will be beginning a new unit in Social Studies called Exploring Economics. We will be learning the first lesson called What is Economics? There will be assignments posted on Tuesday and Thursday this week.

Here is the description of Tuesday’s assignment.

  1. There are some vocabulary cards with definitions that go with the lesson this week. Feel free to use them as flash cards and read them over this week.
  2. You can give an example to your child to help them understand the term “economics” if you would like. Example: Have one candy bar (or desired snack) and say, “I would like to give this away” “Who would like it?” (Have everyone in your family hold up their hands.) Explain that you only have one and more than one person wants it- there is not enough to go around. Remind your child that an economic term to explain this scenario is “scarcity.” The term scarcity leads us to the definition of economics which is the study of how society uses their scarce resources to get goods and services.
  3.  Watch the Brainpop about Goods and Services

  1. Answer the “Stop and Think” questions on the Google Doc posted on Google Classroom after reading the section. Do not forget to try the interactive videos and activities in the section!

5th:

Fifth graders will be doing research of what living in the colonies was like, and then will use what they learn to write a diary entry as if they lived in colonial times. There is a video to explain the assignment to them that they should watch before attempting it.
