Dearborn’s “Continuity of Learning Plan” Begins!
Starting tomorrow, Dearborn Public Schools is enacting its online learning plan as required by the state of Michigan. The great news for our classroom is that not much will change in terms of work load and lessons offered. It is important to note that completion of assignments and participation in lessons in expected from this point on, and will factor into June report cards.
Here is a letter from Superintendent Maleyko introducing the inline learning plan:

Here is a description of the plan and several documents describing it. I recommend reading the document titled “Dearborn Public Schools MDE Continuity of Learning Application Plan April 2020” for in-depth information:

I will clarify the main points of the online learning plan in tomorrow’s post.
Two New Resources to Help Families Keep Track of Work
On Mondays, I am offering two new documents that will help myself and families stay in communication about student’s learning and work completion.
- “Weekly Schedule of Assignments” which will summarize the weekly assignments I describe in the blog on one-easy to read page. This will allow families to plan ahead for assignments. This document will be posted to the blog on Mondays.
- “Weekly Progress Report” which will document what assignments students turned in from the previous week and serve as a starting point for us to discuss next steps in student learning. My hope is this will helpful to families since completion of assignments is now expected and required. This will be sent to each parent’s email.
Math for the Week
4th Grade: We will complete lessons 4, 5, and 6 of module 5 this week. New math lessons will come out Monday (due Tuesday), Wednesday (due Thursday), and Friday (due Sunday). Students will be responsible for watching the Knowledge on the Go video and completing the problem set, and can watch the EngageNY video and do the homework as optional extra practice. Students are ALSO responsible for finishing lessons 4, 5 and 6 on Zearn by Sunday.
5th Grade: We will complete lessons 16, 17, and 18 of module 5 this week. New math lessons will come out Monday (due Tuesday), Wednesday (due Thursday), and Friday (due Sunday). Students will be responsible for watching the Knowledge on the Go video and completing the problem set, and can watch the EngageNY video and do the homework as optional extra practice. Students are ALSO responsible for finishing lessons 16, 17, and 18 on Zearn by Sunday.
ELA
Live reading lessons: To meet new district requirements, we will have live reading lessons at 12:30 three days a week (Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday) at 12:30. There is not a live reading lesson on Monday or Wednesday. Students are expected to participate in the lessons live or complete the alternate assignment on the same day.
Readworks: There will be one Readworks assignment on Monday, which will be due Tuesday.
RazKids: Students will begin small-group work on a website called RazKids on Wednesday. I will provide login information to you all.
Writing: Students will be planning and writing an opinion piece on the following topic: “Should people be staying in their homes during the coronavirus pandemic?” Students will have an assignment where they pick their stance due Monday, will complete a graphic organizer to plan their writing Tuesday and Wednesday, and write their piece on Thursday and Friday. Three video lessons will be posted to help students complete this assignment on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
Finally, students are expected to do 30 minutes in independent reading each day, just like they would if we had in-person school.
Social Studies (no science this week)
4th grade: we are beginning a unit on economics. Students will have two lessons and assignments to complete, one on Tuesday (due Wednesday) and another on Thursday (due Sunday). These lessons will take the form of pre-recorded videos.
5th grade: we will complete two lessons this week where students will learn new information about the colonies. These lessons will take the form on pre-recorded videos and a check for understanding. One will be posted Tuesday (due Wednesday) and one will be posted Thursday (due Sunday).
Music, PE, Art, and Science Enrichment
Students have weekly assignments for each of their special classes. Students can find these assignments on Google Classroom under the Classwork tab. These assignments are required and will factor into report card grades for those subjects.
