Hello everyone! We are gearing up for our first week of online school. At 8 am every school day this week, I will post on this blog listing the assignments for the day. All assignments for that day will also be published at 8 am on Google Classroom. The assignments will considered “on time” as long as they are turned in any time that day to allow for families’ different schedules.
Math
Using videos, online resources, and printable worksheets, we will move forward with Eureka math.
5th Grade
We will do module 5 lessons 1, 2, and 3 this week and make sure we are keeping up on Zearn. At the end of the week Friday, all 5th graders should have finished Module 5 lesson 3 on Zearn.
Please note I will be moving all students back to the start of Module 5 to make sure they are getting support with the correct skills.
4th Grade
We will do module 4 lessons 9, 10, and 11 this week and make sure we are keeping up on Zearn. At the end of the week Friday, all 4th graders should have finished Module 4 lesson 11 on Zearn.
Please note I will be moving all students back to Module 4 Lesson 9 (if they were ahead) to make sure they are getting support with the correct skills.
ELA
I will be reading aloud our class book, Holes by Louis Sachar, from 12:30 pm to 1 pm each day on Zoom, a virtual teaching website. Participating in the lesson as it’s happening is optional. Students will be given access to a video of the book read aloud to listen to on their own time, and parents, guardians or siblings could also choose to read the book aloud to students as a bonding activity. We will read chapters 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, and 34 this week. Students should finish reading or listening to chapter 34 by Friday.
Students will have three assignments on Readworks due this week to help them maintain their nonfiction reading skills.
Students will still do spelling. They will have have two assignments on the spelling words. We will use the spelling words from last week because students did not test on them.
On Friday I will send out a small group assignment to each reading group to be completed by the following Friday. Some students are in more than one reading group, but students will only receive one assignment.
All writing will be tied into science or social studies.
Science
To manage work load, I am only doing two science assignments this week. Students will do one to wrap up the lesson we did not finish last week, and one short one about germs.
Social Studies
5th Grade
Fifth graders will write a paragraph describing the colony of Pennsylvania this week.
4th Grade
Fourth graders will finish writing their paragraphs about their branch on the federal government this week. Students got a great head start on this. Some might have to start from scratch if they were unable to get their notes from school, but I will provide supports to make this easier.
“Sharpen the Saw” Daily Challenge
“Sharpen the Saw” is one of the Seven Habits from Leader In Me. When we take care of ourselves by staying active, eating healthy, and resting our bodies and our minds, we “sharpen our saws” so we can do our best work and be our happiest selves.
Each day, students will be given a TOTALLY optional challenge to Sharpen the Saw, like taking a walk, stretching, or writing in a journal. Students will get extra credit on the “life skills” part of their report card. All they will need to do is read the challenge, complete the challenge in their home, and then hit the “Mark as Done” button to turn it in.
Request for Your Flexibility and Patience
Please keep in mind that this is a completely new process for Dearborn, and that the district and State of Michigan are still forming their recommendations about what each teacher and student should be doing daily. While I have received extensive training in teaching classes online, it is impossible for me to predict how this first week of assignments will work for your unique family. Please provide me feedback throughout the week about how this new style of learning could be improved to best help your child. I want nothing more than for our students to be happy, safe, and to continue learning.
My Availability
Again, I will be available from 9 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday on the following platforms:
- Remind (link: https://www.remind.com/join/msjuntune)
- Email (juntuna@dearbornschools.org)
- I can also set up a phone call with you for the following day if you need support that cannot be fully addressed over Remind or email. Since I will also be focusing on my family during this time, I cannot guarantee a same-day phone call.
Stay safe, everyone!
