Week of 11/25

Hello everyone! Below, please see the classwork and homework for this week. It is a shorter week- only two days! Students will have homework Monday evening, but the only homework between Tuesday and Sunday will be to read 20 minutes a day (except for one optional assignment for 4th grade related to interviewing a family member). Students’ time off should be spent enjoying time with family. I encourage students to read with a family member each day, as this is a time of year where families gather together.

ELA

Given the short week, we are holding off on learning a new reading strategy as a whole class. Instead, we will focus on individualized instruction this week. Every student will meet with me either Monday or Tuesday to touch base about their progress as a reader.

In our opinion writing unit, students will become familiar with the grading rubric and use it to analyze some pieces of opinion writing. Students will also find out which prompt they have been assigned to write a persuasive essay about.

Math

Fifth Grade Math

Students will be sent home with their exam grades on Tuesday (one student needs to finish their exam, and I cannot release answers until i have received all the tests back). In the meantime, fifth graders are beginning a new unit on adding and subtracting fractions. We will complete two lessons this week. See the guide to homework for Monday below:

Fourth Grade Math

Fourth graders are in the middle of a unit about multiplying and dividing numbers with multiple digits. In the next two lessons, they are using place value disks to represent multiplication of two, three, and four-digit numbers. Below is the guide to supporting student’s with Monday’s homework.

Science

In science, students are engaging in a discussion about how the position of the sun in relation to the earth impacts earth’s seasons. Students will engage in the investigation Monday and take a quiz on it Tuesday. Please note: we will only be engaging in this lesson once before they take the assessment. If students wish to review the lesson Monday night before their quiz on Tuesday, I have included a link to the lesson below for their review.

Social Studies

Fifth Grade Social Studies

Students are engaging in a lesson about early exchanges between European explorers, Native Americans, and African slaves. They will read multiple primary sources about these topics. This lesson provides context and background knowledge for their final lesson in the unit about the Colombian Exchange.

Fourth Grade Social Studies

Students are beginning a lesson on the “push” factors that motivate people to move away from where they are living, and the “pull” factors that motivate people to move to certain locations.

On Tuesday, fourth graders will be sent home with an assignment for social studies. The assignment requires students to interview between two and four family members about their family history (the places they have moved to and from). The assignment will not be due until late next week, but students will likely have more opportunity to interview family members over the break. For this reason, students will have a better quality assignment if they complete it over break. Again, the assignment is optional over the break, as it will not be due until later in the social studies unit.

There is no spelling quiz this week. That is all the classwork and homework. Fifth grade families, please be ready to fill our yearbook forms tomorrow night if you want a yearbook!! They are due Tuesday.
