How Class and Grading will Work the Rest of the Year

Good morning students and parents! Hopefully by this point you have heard Principal Martin and Superintendent Maleyko explain that the rest of the year is going to look differently than the past few weeks have. I wanted to take a minute to explain what’s going to happen in my class.

Grading Policy
Everything we do from here on out WILL BE GRADED. However, your grade will come from a slightly different scale than we’re all used to.

“A” — you’ve done most of the work and are checking in with me every week
“G” — you’ve done enough of the work to get credit for the class and are usually checking in with me
“N” — you haven’t done your work, haven’t checked in with me, and will not get credit for the class

If you get an “N” you will have to take the class again in Summer School or Night School.

This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to get an A, and I hope that I am able to give everyone an A for their work. If you are not usually an A student, this is your opportunity to get an A! Take this chance to impress colleges and/or future employers! Or just do it to keep yourselves busy while you’re bored out of your minds at home, whatever motivates you to do the work, I’m ok with, as long as you do it.

As far as the work from prior to this week, I am allowed to factor it into your grade as long as it does not hurt your grade. Those of you who have done the work the past few weeks, great!!!! You are on the fast track to getting an A in my class! Those of you that haven’t, don’t panic. You can still get an A but need to be on top of the work for the rest of the year. Doing the work prior to this week can only help your grade and help you to understand what I’m teaching right now better.

What Class Will Look Like
— I will post assignments for the week on Sundays at Noon. This week, I will post this week and next week’s assignments so you know exactly what’s coming up for a while and can work more at your own pace.
— All assignments will be due on Fridays at 10 A.M. If you need an extension, be in touch with me via email or Remind.
— I will continue posting two assignments per week for you to complete, although I may add supplemental materials from time-to-time that would be optional work.
— We will have video check-ins twice a week on Google Hangouts, at least for this week. The schedule is below. You need to attend those as well to get credit for the week! I’m going to see how this week goes and decide whether or not I should change what check ins look like for my class.
— There will be no finals and seniors’ last days will still be May 21.
— PLEASE be in contact with me at any point if you feel like you can’t meet a due date for any reason, if you’re sick, if you’re feeling stressed, whatever. Same goes if you have concerns about my class. Just talk to me PRIVATELY via email or on Remind, not on here.

This is the schedule we will use for Google Hangout check-ins this week for my class:
— 1st Hour: Mondays and Wednesdays 1:00-1:40
— 2nd Hour: Mondays and Wednesdays 1:40-2:20
— 3rd Hour: Mondays and Wednesdays 2:20-3:00
— 4th Hour: Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:00-1:40
— 6th Hour: Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:20-3:00

Be in touch with me if those times don’t work for you so that I can adjust accordingly.

If you have any other questions please ask me via email or remind! Hope all of you are doing well and staying safe! I miss all of you a lot and am looking forward to seeing all of you this week on Google Hangouts!

Best,
Mr. Judd

4/15

For the remainder of the week, please read Chapter 20 Section 3 of the textbook and do Questions 1, 3, and 4 of the section assessment. For the terms and names, please only give the textbook definition. This will be due on Friday at midnight. I will be able to give an update on grading and how the rest of the year will look in my class very soon — please be on the lookout for that and continue to stay up-to-date on the work! Have a great day and stay safe!

April 13 Plan for the Week/Update

Good morning!!! Welcome back from what was hopefully at the very least a relaxing spring break.

Last we left U.S. History, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald on November 22, 1963, in an attack that many believe was a conspiracy but has never been definitively proven. Kennedy’s Vice President, Lyndon Johnson, was president for the next five years. Kennedy and Johnson were Democrats (like Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders today). When Johnson became president, he had Democratic majorities in Congress and on the Court, and he knew how to use them effectively, as he whipped Congress into action and passed the most liberal (left wing) legislation ever passed in American history. He called his agenda “the Great Society” because he wanted to build a utopia (perfect world) in America.

This week, we are going to talk about Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society. That will help us get ready to get into the Civil Rights Movement, which was going on at the same time, and which we will start next week. For today and tomorrow, you will compare Johnson’s Great Society programs with Kennedy’s “New Frontier” programs. On Wednesday and for the remainder of the week, I will ask you to pick a case that the Supreme Court talked about during Kennedy and Johnson’s time in office and summarize it to me. I’ll post explanations for both.

In other news, this week, administration is figuring out a final plan for the remainder of the year. They’re trying to figure out how grading should look during quarantine. What I can say for sure right now is this: THIS CLASS WILL COUNT AS CREDIT, AS WILL ALL YOUR OTHER CLASSES. That means it WILL be graded. However, they aren’t sure whether we’ll do a pass/fail/incomplete system or something else, or how they’ll treat online assignments before now where we were told we couldn’t give grades for your work. I don’t know for sure what will happen, but the minute I know how that looks, I’ll let you know. In the meantime, this class is going to keep looking like it did before break, with two assignments per week.

I know this has been really confusing for everyone and that online hasn’t been ideal for anyone, but this is unfortunately the way it’s going to have to be. I am continually impressed by the work and effort many of you are continuing to do under less than ideal circumstances. Some of you have fallen behind, which is understandable. I am happy to work with you to help you catch back up, but you will need to try to catch back up.

In addition, please be in contact with me if you or someone you know has COVID, or if you’re having a tough time coping with all of the stress of this situation. Not only do I need to know as your teacher, but I want to know you guys are doing OK and what I can do to help your situation as much as I can. This SUCKS, for all of us.

With that said, everyone have another wonderful day in quarantine! Stay safe and wash your hands! To help you on both fronts, here’s a link to some hand washing memes 🙂 https://www.laughtard.com/14-funny-wash-your-hands-memes/

Kennedy Assassination

Good morning! For today and Friday, your task is to watch the following two videos on the JFK assassination. The first is a video that summarizes what happened, and the second shows the top ten craziest conspiracy theories. You can also skim the wikipedia page on the different conspiracy theories to learn more about them. After you watch the videos, please email to me or comment below your answers to the following two questions:

1. Which do you think is more likely: the “lone gunman” theory (Oswald acted alone) or one of the many conspiracy theories (Oswald had help)? Why do you think that?
2. Which of the “crazy” conspiracies do you think is craziest? Which is most realistic?
3. What would you like to know more about related to the Kennedy assassination?

Have a great day, and remember to wash your hands and stay safe!!!!

3/31

Good morning students! I apologize for not being able to update yesterday, I lost power for most of the day. I wanted to give you all a quick summary of what I hope everyone does for my class this week.

For the next two days, I want all of you to focus on your film reviews. I would like for you to submit those by tomorrow night. Know that it is a free chance for you to receive substantive feedback on your writing, which will only help you as you prepare to move on in your academic careers.

On Thursday, I will give you guys a video to watch on the Kennedy assassination. I’d like to hear some of your thoughts on whether or not there was a conspiracy to murder the president. That assignment will be due Friday night.

To supplement your learning for this week, remember that I have posted the textbook chapters for chapter 20. They are located a couple posts below this one.

In addition, if you’re finding yourself bored during this crazy time, remember that you CAN do work that impacts your grade. For those of you with missing assignments, you can do them at home and email them to me to help improve your grade. Check MiStar or email me to see what grades you have missing. For some of you, it could make a huge difference.

Hope you’re all doing well and staying safe! Wash your hands! And don’t be too crazy for your parents!

Thank You!

Students and parents, thank you so much for your hard work over these past two weeks! I am continually impressed with the quality work you are continuing to do during these difficult times. Today I have nothing new to give for you to do; this is just a reminder to keep working hard and work on those film reviews, which are again due next Wednesday. Have a great day and weekend, and most importantly of all, stay safe!!!
