Fall Harvest Party

Next Wednesday, the class will have a Fall Harvest party.  Students may wear a costume, bring a snack (including chips), and a drink (no pop) to watch the movie, “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”  Students may also bring in candy to pass out.  Please note that this is still a regular school day.  We will still be doing math, reading, writing, science, and social studies, so it’s important that your child attends school that day.

Learning Update

Reading:  We have been focusing on finding the main idea and key details in a nonfiction text while also learning about cause and effect relationships.  Together, we have created a short paragraph about snakes describing how a non-poisonous snakes defend themselves.  Next week, we will be focusing  on drawing inferences. Students will be referring explicitly to the text to draw literal and inferential meaning.

Students receive assignments based on their reading group. We have a parapro and resource teacher that work with certain groups. Please check with your child to see if they have any homework.

Writing:  We have been focusing on narratives for the last few weeks.  Students have been working tirelessly to add an interesting lead, dialogue, concrete details, sensory details, and strong words to their writing.  Next week, we will begin to draft our narratives and begin the process of revising and editing.  The focus of the narratives has been based on the mentor text, “Local Girl and Her Dog Are Winners.”

Math:  While Eureka Math is a new program, we have been working very hard in class to make sure we understand.  I will post videos on Class Dojo to help students if they misunderstood a lesson.

This week our focus has been adding large numbers and solving multi-step word problems.  Students should be bringing their math journals home daily to help with their homework.  Homework either comes from their Succeed book or from Zearn.

Social Studies:  Students are learning about special purpose maps.  Please contact Mrs. Poulos if you have any questions.

Science: Last week in science we started a new unit about energy called “Energizing Everything.” Your child learned how things need energy to move and that energy can be stored in many different ways. We saw examples of cars powered by gasoline, people, springs and even food! Your child built a rubber band racer to test how the energy put into the racer impacts how far the racer goes. We solved the mystery, “Can a car move without gas?”

You can support this week’s learning by watching another example of people powered vehicles with your child ( https://www.safeyoutube.net/w/ySj ). You might ask, “How does this car have the energy to go? Where did the people get their energy? What other vehicles get their energy from people?”
