Honors Physics Homework (Due Thursday)

  1. Using the circuit diagram below, find the total current and the current across each resistor. Do all three add up to the total current?
  2. A transformer has 500 turns of the primary winding and 10 turns of the secondary winding. Determine the secondary voltage if the primary voltage is 120 V.
  3. Assume one of the Niagara Falls’ generators produces 2,000 volts at a speed of 400 m/s. Find the product of the length and magnetic field.
  4. Neon signs require about 12,000 volts for their operation. What should be the ratio of the number of loops in the secondary to number of loops in the primary for a neon sign transformer that operates off of 120 volts? Explain your answer.
  5. Explain the difference between an electromagnet and electromagnetic induction. What are some examples of an electromagnet?
